Where is man city?
Can’t believe Ipswich aren’t there
We didn’t make the second tier until the 50s, so have had a lot less games than the other teams.
On the full table we’re a place below Norwich with 100 games less played.
Yep, I was going to query that, if it were only the Championship era. Ipswich got relegated from the Premier League in about 1995, and were in the Championship until they got relegated 18 months ago. I can’t think of any other team that has been in purgatory for anywhere near as long. Maybe Preston?
We were relegated in 2019 so a bit more than 18 months ago. And we were last relegated from the PL in 2001. Our relegation to League One was the first time we’d been out the top two leagues in England since 1957.
But before that we were the longest serving Championship club. I think it might be Bristol City now?
When Middlesbrough back? I remember watching them some 20 years ago because I liked Juninho Paulista. They seem to have faded into obscurity since that time.
Table when organized by Points per Match

1.450 - Norwich
1.442 - Blackburn
1.438 - Burnley
1.430 - Derby
1.418 - Fulham
1.417 - Preston NE
1.402 - Sheffield W

1.308 - Charlton
1.306 - Bristol
1.301 - Grimsby
1.261 - Barnsley
Preston mid table no matter which way you sort it.
Thanks I was here for that, considering the difference in games played that should be the default sorting value if you want to make an all-time table that means something
Plus, the one major caveat I would add to both charts is that the English Football League changed to the 3-point win scheme in 1981-1982 season, so I have no idea how that would influence the points per game calculation to make a true all-time table. OP’s table, provided from the link in this post, calculates the points total using the 3-point scheme.
that should be the default sorting value
That would be a totally different chart. Spurs and the Manchester teams would be sorted to the top on far fewer matches played.
Yeah true, making them the all-time better championship sides, on average per match. But that doesn’t make much sense, so set a minimum of matches played and you’re good
mancity could never
Man City have the 6th most games in the top flight
Surprised to see Grimsby there, never think of them as being a Championship stalwart.
Barnsley being 1st but also having the worst GD is a lovely sight
I laughed at the 700ish extra games for a 300 ish point lead.
One must imagine Barnsley happy
Something interesting to compare between this link and the EPL All-time Table would be the least successful Championship team to have ever played in the EPL - Northampton Town!
There are three other teams from Burton above Burton Albion lmao.
All 3 of those other Burton teams are part of the lineage of Albion. Swifts and Wanderers joined to form Burton United, which later became a part of Albion.
Burton went through loads of teams in the early 20th century
Everton still near the bottom lol
I’m looking at win % in a table like this. Everton’s is 45.8%
Only 3 teams have a win % above 50. They are
- Arsenal 50.5%
- Liverpool 56.8%
- Manchester City 50.3% (who have by far the most games played of the 3)
Of the rest of the notable clubs,
- United’s is 49.7%
- Chelsea’s is 48.8%
- Newcastle’s is 47.4%
- West Ham’s is 44.0%
- Leeds is 41.5%
- Spurs is 46.5%
- Aston Villa’s is 42.7%
For context
- Leicester’s is 41.2% having played the 3rd most games all time in the 2nd division
- Sheffield United is 43.1%
- Birmingham City is 41.3%
- West Brom is 43.0%
- Ipswich is 40.8%
- Sunderland’s is 42.8%
Yea us playing hundreds of games less in the second division than every other team is a good thing.
Who’s made the most money from promotion?
Probably Leicester overall given their peaks
Well it would just be whoever has spent the most time in the PL. Since you don’t make money from the actual act of promotion
It would be whoever has spent the most time in the Premiership recently. It wouldn’t surprise me if Luton will end up making more this season than Coventry did in the first 10 seasons up there.
I read somewhere that Barnsley were the team that had played most second-flight seasons but I didn’t realise how far ahead they were - over 600 games more than Hull in second.
Tell me what I’m missing:
I’m counting 58 seasons in Barnsley history between Championship and Second Division.
3.289 matches equals 56,70 matches per season. How does this add up at all?
Preston being a mid table team is never getting old
They are not midtable, they are 12th
Supporting Preston and palace most be the most dull thing in the world
barnsley in second division purgatory
Norwich are also 24th in the all time premier league table.
Barnsley leading this with a -686 goal difference.
Thats how you know they are the kings of the championship
