That’s because lots of tory party donors are commercial landlords I guess. For the same reason they didn’t want people to work at home they also don’t want to give companies a reason to rent less of their office space.
I think there’s a more fundamental issue than that. Many many Tory voters are of the opinion that life shouldn’t improve. They want to “conserve”.
I’ve spoken to Tory voters about exactly this and their opinion is that they had to work 5 days a week so everyone else should have to. Even if it’s overall worse for all involved. The same rule can be applied to anything. If they had to suffer, everyone else should also have to suffer. Tories are selfish, and regressive.
I mean why? If people are more productive, and it’s improves their lives. We also need to deal with a climate crisis and having people not commuting for a whole extra day/having extra time to engage politically would be very useful. Although maybe they are trying to disincentivise the last part.
The levelling up, housing and communities secretary, Michael Gove, told council leaders this week he believed “very strongly” that taxpayers “need to have people working a full five-day week”.
I’d rather someone did an effective job in 4 days than a miserable unproductive 5
Don’t suppose he said why he believed taxpayers need that?
I’ve experienced working a 4 day week and I found it such a positive experience both from how much I got done in the 4 days and how much happier I was. I’d love for everyone to have that opportunity, especially public sector workers.
I would go so far as to say councils should be working 6 days a week…but doesn’t mean it has to be the same people all those days. But would be good if some services could be contacted on a staurday. But that is what shift work is for right
Sigh, this is why we can’t have nice things 🙄
