This is a massive undercount, since it only refers to specific people who are known to have died. The shattered civil infrastructure is guaranteed to be missing thousands of deaths, people buried under the rubble and never found, or whose bodies were eaten by scavenging animals or quietly buried by some survivor, or of whom there is simply nothing left.
A more accurate statistical estimate is somewhere from 186,000 to 335,500.

The 40,000 number has barely changed in months. Can’t see why journalists keep using it.
