Submission Statement: As the world continues to burn and suffer heatwaves, floods, and hurricanes, China is not faring any better than the rest of the world. China strongly desires, and in a substantial number of areas needs to (roadways, electrical grid, plumbing), still catch up to the west in terms of average living quality for all residents. The citizens in the concentrated cities on the Eastern side of the country are wealthier than the average citizen in China by a longshot, and this has implications for their emissions; With China’s population being so large (1.4 BILLION), they can have the equivalent number of population of the United States at a western living standard, and still need to catch up the entire billion of the country that still is not at that living standard, before they can say that they are done with their carbon emissions, or at the very least feel the amount of carbon emissions they have emitted per citizen is equivalent to the average citizen in the Western countries. While economic growth in Western countries is mainly excess and goes straight to the wealthiest of citizens, China’s economic growth is poised upon emitting emissions that could very well cause their country to become uninhabitable within the century. And with a solid 1/6 of the entire Earth’s population, China is very much aware that that amount of emissions could be enough to push the climate’s changing patterns into overdrive.
