I DID THE UPDATE to the applications.
They’re LIVE LIVE LIVE
you can view them when you go to make a new account
please don’t use this as an opportunity to make new accounts.
or do, whatevs.
but ANSWER THE DAMN PROMPS OR I’LL DENY YOUR FUNNY COOL USERNAMES
edit: I’ll leave this up for the rest of the day to let everyone know its done. I’ll probably leave this unlocked so if anyone else wants to drop by and improve a translation or add a new one they can pop by and drop it in instead of making a whole new post or DMing me. not that’s gonna stop anyone from doing exactly that lmao either one’s fine.
old message
Hi folks, its me.
I’m stealing the top of the website for a few days because a thought occurred to me a while back that goes along the lines of “damn, we really haven’t updated the application for a hot minute haven’t we?” also “damn we’re getting quite a few international folks in but they might not know what the lingo and abbreviations in the application really mean”
which leads me to this post:
A general poll on what languages hexbear users know… (read: I’m too lazy to figure out how to do an actual poll thingy so I’ll just tally up everyones comments. Also don’t be a smartass and say “English lol”
)
And, arguably more exciting, a general request to our multilingual users to help translate the application into their language in order to help other possible new folks to know what we’re all about. (Also a general discussion on whether or not this is a good idea. I got a thumbs up from the others in the cabal of evil admins but I’m playing fast and loose with this because I had just drank a bunch of coffee when I wrote this up and I was vibrating like a hairless chihuahua walking through a park in fall.
)
To remind people what the application looks like, it’s the following three sentences.
How did you find out about Hexbear, and why do you want to join?
Why did you choose your username?
What are your views on Gender and Sexual Minorities [GSM] / LGBTQ rights, racial justice, animal liberation, and similar movements?
So to summarize, Im bored, im curious what languages everyone speaks, and I’m looking for volunteers to translate the application into their native tongue so future applicants can have an easier time understanding what the site’s about. The translated versions will be contained in spoilers so as to ensure the whole application page doesn’t look densely bloated like me after eating oatmeal

I’m gonna try to translate them in French and Japanese:
French: Comment avez-vous découvert Hexbear et pourquoi souhaitez-vous vous inscrire?
Japanese: Hexbearはどうやって知りましたか、なぜ参加したいのですか?
French: Pourquoi avez-vous choisi votre pseunonyme?
Japanese: 自分のユーザー名どう選ぶんですか?
French: Quelles sont vos opinions concernant les droits des minorités sexuelles et de genre (MSG)/LGBTQ, la justice raciale, la libération des animaux et autres mouvements similaires?
Japanese: LGBTQや反人種差別や動物の解放やどう思いますか?
You should check for spelling for French and if I used the correct words for complicated terms in Japanese, but these should be fine I think.
Surely it should be ユーザー名 or even ユーザーネーム rather than 名前, right? Also “and why do you want to join?” is completely omitted from the first sentence, and Hexbear is misspelled.
Side note, I support ヘキスベア as the official katakanization of Hexbear.
I’m partial to ヘクスベア personally and ヘキスベア could be Americanized as “Heck he’s bear”
ヘクサゴン on Wikipedia redirects to ヘキサゴン, just sayin’
Thanks, I fixed it.
I think 名前 can be used for a username but I’m not confident enough to be quoted on that so I changed it to ユーザー名 anyway.
I’m gonna keep hexbear spelled in romaji though because that I’m pretty sure is something that you can do in Japanese and how they would do it most of the time for a western website.
Yeah, absolutely.
Seconding ユーザーネーム
Shouldn’t that be なぜ参加したい
I’d also second that. For instance, 反人種差別 (anti + race + discrimination = anti-racism) at least in English seems to have a different nuance to racial justice
You’re right, I fixed it, thanks.
I have no idea what to use instead though.
I’m not sure either. 人種的平等 seems to translate racial equity (e.g. https://www.esri.com/ja-jp/racial-equity/overview) but I’m not sure if that’s closer
C’est très bien côté français!
J’enlèverais juste l’accent circonflexe sur le â de raciale.
Un peu tournure de phrase, mais j’aurais tendance à dire : Comment avez-vous découvert Hexbear ; et pourquoi souhaitez-vous vous inscrire ?
And mostly I see more and more “tu” on general email between people who doesn’t necessarily know the other. I wonder if we should do the same? At least in my mostly French province in North America.
And yeah I’d like to help out on translation, too, if needed!
C’est fait.
I’m gonna leave it as “vous” for now, we can always change it later.
Please do!
I have a few minor suggestions for the French translations.
Je crois qu’il faut enlever la virgule avant “et”. Peute-être un point-virgule comme propose @damnatum_seditiosus@hexbear.net, ou rien.
Je dirais plutôt “Pourquoi” que “Comment”.
Quelles sont vos opinions concernant les droits des minorités sexuelles/genres minoritaires/gens LGBTQ, la justice raciale, la libération des animaux et les autres movements similaires?
I changed the 2 firsts and the spelling of “opinions”.
That’s technically not incorrect but a French native speaker (at least from continental France, I can’t say for sure about French speaking Canada or Africa) would say/write it “et autres mouvements similaires?”, adding “les” is not a very natural sounding way to say that.
Fair, but there are other corrections to that sentence.
Quelles sont vos opinions concernant les droits des minorités sexuelles/genres minoritaires/gens LGBTQ, la justice raciale, la libération des animaux et autres movements similaires?
I put in italic my suggestion and in bold the spelling and grammar corrections. Mainly it’s “Quelles”, “minorités”, and “libération”.
Another option than “minorités sexuelles/genres minoritaires/gens LGBTQ” could be “genres et sexualités minoritaires/gens LGBTQ”.
Thanks
No problem! I just edited, but I realized you replied before I did, so I’ll put it here instead: another option for the section on GSM/LGBTQ could be “genres et sexualités minoritaires/gens LGBTQ”, to avoid the repetition of the “minorités”.
In Canada the “official” translation is minorités sexuelles et de genre (MSG), as well as 2ELGBTQI+
@ExotiqueMatter@lemmygrad.ml from the commenter I’m replying to, “des minorités de genres et minorités sexuelles” can be replaced with “des minorités sexuelles et de genre (MSG)”.
For the fourth point
