If you are interested in breaking the two party system, it is literally the most important issue out there. IMO there is no way, outside of violent revolution, of breaking up the two party system besides this.

Voting is not the only tool we have to put pressure on politicians who actually believe in democracy. They will respond to public outcry. The problem is politicians who don’t believe in democracy because all that moves them is money.

I don’t know which examples you are thinking of, but I would bet that is after changes in the law or without an explicit constitutional procedure on voting.

As far as voting for the lesser evil, that is beyond naive. Every election is voting for the leaser evil. If you expect to find a candidate you agree with 100%, you will be waiting til the heat death of the universe.

The other poster said police and prisons are not necessary. I think it is an entirely valid question to ask what they propose be done about serial murderers, rapists, child molesters, and the like.

The unfortunate reality is that someone is going to have a monopoly on violence and it’s better to have a choice in who. Accountability is tough but possible. Body cameras and the ubiquity of smart phones has made it a lot easier to prove what really happened. These camera records need to be stored and processed by an independent federal agency though. Qualified immunity obviously needs to be dramatically curtailed. Cops should have to live in the neighborhood they patrol whenever possible. Eliminating anyone with the slightest hint of white supremacist leanings from candidacy. There are definitely things that can be done to cutrail the potential abuses of power.

I really do hope they do what you say and shut down the government again over ICE. With luck they will only have to keep it shut down until the newly elected democrat majority house takes office in January.
