Many year ago I lost my job and just as I got a new job but before my insurance could kick in, my appendix ruptured. I had to get surgery and was in the hospital for 3 days, the bill came to something like $25,000.
I negotiated with the hospital, they reduced it to $11,000 and set me on a payment plan. After I paid off the $11,000 they sent me to collections for the other $14,000. Those fuckers.
I refused to pay it and it tanked my credit rating, which made it difficult to get a home loan five years after.

16·3 days agoCorporations sell inferior product, it kills hundreds of people. They claim no responsibility and move on without any government intervention. Maybe a few lower level employees lose their jobs, despite the choice to release the deadly product coming from above.

1·3 days agoA work of fiction isn’t a bridge either. It’s a journey.
My analogy would liken it more to a cross-country trip to some fabled destination. You embark on the trip and have great music great friends/family in the car. See great sights, stop at great places along the way and enjoy great regional foods. Then you get to the destination and it’s a big let down.
Was the whole trip a waste? Not in my opinion. Sure, the destination was a letdown but think of all the fun you had getting there.
I think it’s a reference to Depeche Mode’s famous live album & documentary from 1989.
Stop the train and lock it down and hold it ransom. Refuse to release the train’s brakes until they pay $[desired amount].

Well if you’re comparing 333 Commerce St building (topped out in 1993) with Barad-dûr, as depicted in Peter Hackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy (released in 2001-2093), then you maybe should ask why Peter Jackson’s art inspiration (specifically illustrator Alan Lee) based their depiction of Sauron’s tower in the AT&T building (although maybe the architect of the building in Nashville did also draw their inspiration from Alan Lee’s art).
I could find no other depiction of Barad-dûr prior to Jackson’s which had that same forked design, most artists drew a sinister-looking but traditionally spired tower design, with the eye peering through a window to some effect.
Tolkien’s book describes the tower like this:
“Then at last his gaze was held: wall upon wall, battlement upon battlement, black tower of adamant, he saw it: Barad-dûr, Fortress of Sauron. All hope left him… …and then he saw, rising black, blacker and darker than the vast shades amid which it stood, the cruel pinnacles and iron crown of the topmost tower of Barad-dûr. One moment only it stared out, but as from some great window immeasurably high there stabbed northward a flame of red, the flicker of a piercing Eye”
No mention of the two-prong fork design that I could find.
