I think I missed the part with examples of how the media is creating consent for this? On the contrary, I feel like I’ve seen mostly articles about capitalist interests: how this is going to raise gas prices, increase inflation, and hurt the economy. Outside of the typical right-wing propaganda outlets like Fox News, the sense I get is the media recognizes this is deeply unpopular and there’s little rationale for it. I do wish they’d push harder on those points rather than just reporting “facts,” but that’s a longstanding criticism.

I don’t know if you’ve ever spent much time in Cuellar’s district, but there aren’t very many progressives there. It’s culturally very conservative, but also more collectivist given the Mexican and Tejano culture, so they don’t fit as naturally into the Republican party and are more likely to support moderate or conservative Democrats. That said, Henry Cuellar is fucking awful

Medicare Advantage is a total scam. Having worked in healthcare, I’ve seen it first hand, and tried to inform my mother, but she wouldn’t listen and refused to let go of her Humana Advantage Plan. “It’s cheaper,” she said, though she would have no problem affording more. Well guess what, she needed surgery, and they denied it. After much back and forth, they eventually approved it, but the HOSPITAL close to her wasn’t in network, so she had to get it done in a totally different part of town. I finally convinced her to drop the Advantage plan and enroll in traditional Medicare after that.

Why’s it cheaper, mom? Because they get to keep all the money they don’t spend on your care. The literal only reason Advantage plans exist is so healthcare companies can pocket money for denying you care.
