Wild Feed@sh.itjust.works•Laughing Gas Can Offer Immediate Relief From Depression, Study Finds
6·5 days agoYeah, I had oral surgery maybe ten years ago, with ketamine as part of the anaesthesia. Had a solid six month remission of depression.
That was a literal trip too, though. Coming out of it, I was talking to celestial beings and such lol.

GrapheneOS@lemmy.world•Battery respecting - private instant messengerEnglish
2·5 days agoI haven’t had battery issues on graphene with signal personally. That being said, I’ve also had no issues with matrix based messaging either. However, matrix does have issues with notification delays that signal doesn’t (again, for me).
Yah, the thick skin may be armor, but it shuts you off from so much. Some, some, of the bad stuff is easier to survive, but all the good out there has just as much trouble getting in.
I don’t think any given trauma recovery paradigm is without a lopsided benefit/drawback ratio. You’re left with scars, period.
Damn, I need to find a lesbian to be in a relationship with

Wild Feed@sh.itjust.works•Laughing Gas Can Offer Immediate Relief From Depression, Study Finds
20·5 days agoJokes aside, it’s interesting.
If there’s a direct action, as in the chemical changing something inside on a physical level, that’s one avenue to look at for both treatment and better understanding of depression as a whole.
If it’s psychological, indirect, then it’s still worth more study because that’s a valuable treatment by itself. But it also helps point towards avenues of understanding the underlying mechanisms of depression.
There really aren’t many things that give even that short a relief from a single use.

Music@lemmy.world•Can someone help me "get" Prince?English
2·6 days agoI get where you’re coming from. I tend to have to “click” with an artist/band before I can really sink into them. Sometimes it never happens.
That being said, I think the best approach to Prince is chronological. His oldest music tends to be the most accessible. As he developed, he got more experimental and that can make it harder to vibe with if you go in without familiarity.
I’d hit up the Wikipedia page and kind of surf through his first three albums. If you haven’t “gotten” what made him popular back then, then the best you’ll reach is appreciating his talent on an abstract level rather than feeling it. Nothing wrong with that at all, clicking with a given music segment or not doesn’t mean anything other than the fact that it doesn’t vibe for you.
But, he really was an amazing songwriter. So you could try browsing just his lyrics and see if that gets you into things that way. I know I’m not a musician in any way, so the subtleties of his guitar and other instrumental talent are beyond me, but I can comfortably say that he was capable of lyrics that could match any poet you wanted to point at. The craft of how he would structure a song is damn potent.
Even his bumping, club friendly stuff like Cream or Get Off is crafted extremely well. So if you’re into lyrics enough, that might be the path that makes him click for you

Cooking @lemmy.world•Turnips greens are so badly underrated
9·7 days agoMan, I feel the same about most greens tbh. But I definitely agree that turnip greens don’t get the love they deserve compared to kale and collards for damn sure. Even chard gets more love
Mustard greens are in the same boat though, usually.
The great thing about turnip greens in particular is that they’re a twofer with the root. As a crop, even in small gardens, it’s a no brainer. You get so much out of the same square footage.
They cook up easier than collards, have more depth and earthiness than kale, and have a mild sweetness that mustard can’t quite match. Vastly underrated.
Have to treat them gentle, and it’s easy to overpower them with too much of the usual pork additions. When you do, they’re a delightful meal but themselves

Trans Memes@lemmy.blahaj.zone•bros can't help themselves 🙄
26·8 days agoLegit, that idea always bugs me. On multiple levels.
For one, a person’s value isn’t in looks to begin with. Then, there’s the misogyny of it, reducing women, yet again, into objects of the gaze (it isn’t just the male gaze, and it isn’t always a sexual thing when it is, and my objection to the idea goes beyond that part).
Like, damn, how shitty someone has to be to even think that thought, much less speak it.
But there’s also the smugness that their idea of beauty must be the right one, and the only acceptable one. Fuck off with that shit.
The old adage of beauty being in the eye of the beholder is more than an adage. Just because their punk ass can’t see beauty doesn’t mean it isn’t there to be seen. Yeah, there’s ranges of features and traits that are going to appeal to different percentages of the population, but that still doesn’t mean any given person’ opinion of those traits is inherently superior.
People can really suck
That’s a new one to me! Thanks, I really do love discovering new words :)

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that the very distinctive vocal style employed by the lead singers of bands like Pearl Jam and Creed (among many others) is called "yarling"English
2·10 days agoThere’s a lot of necessity there. Our natural speaking voices use the throat and lungs in a different way than any singing techniques. And, there’s multiple ways of using them to get a desired sound.
So there’s some degree of style involved, but past a certain point you have to change your voice to sing rather than just speak in tune (which is still a valid thing of its own)
There’s a lot of similarities, that’s for damn sure.
However, since dogs are way smarter than kids, they take less time to learn things
I’ve used all of those except wheeliebin, which I’ve never run across before.
Ain’t no shame in borrowing good slang, and that’s something brits do extremely well imo. It’s usually easy to use, rolls off the tongue, and sounds just silly enough.
I’m right chuffed about it
