The change from game to book is immediate in the way Kratos speaks to Atreus. He’s harsh in the games, cold, distant, and while this is true for the novels, there’s something else there. Spite.

Novel Kratos speaks with the tone of a man who once thrived on bloodshed. There are moments where he speaks about and to the dwarves with a simmer that feels like he’s trying to let out his inner rage. He’s mad at the world, and for the first time, his anger has no target for vengeance. So far, he’s been harsher to Atreus as well, reacting with harsher words to his son. I figure this may come from a place of self loathing. “All Gods are evil boy.” He sees himself in Atreus, and like it or not, he lets that out in small ways.

It’s an interesting change for sure. Probably works better for a novel since the conflict of enemies, monsters, and magic isn’t as important as inner conflict compared to a video game that’s based on action. I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s really intriguing me so far… if only they made a Ragnarok novel! :,)
