Keep anything political I disagree with out of football, if I agree with it football should use its global reach to spread a vital message. Simple.

Israel, Palestine, PGMOL: 3 topics that can be discussed endlessly but not real winners
The idea that sport, or any other aspect of society, is somehow isolated from politics is ridiculous. Everything is political, and encouraging people to avoid it and not think about difficult topics is not exactly conducive to a democratic society.
The article also seems to suggest that certain types of movies should also avoid addressing political topics, which is just a bizarre take.
My eyes hurt from reading the comments in every thread like this.
The emotional intelligence of the average r/soccer user is not fully expanded to comment on issues involving innocent people. Just like the emotional intelligence of the average tax payer is not fully informed about everything the government of the nation they live at does. People are bond to take sides in par to whoever feels like the most oppressed group to feel better with themselves, but unfortunately this, among all the other social issues being vomited onto our war-free privileged ass, is probably the only thing people should not be taking sides because it has been decades of taking sides and losing lives.
Fuck off Jon Sopel. Stick to defending your adultering BBC mate
There would be A LOT less money involved in football if there were no politics involved lol
Oh so now we don’t need politics in football
…says professional journalist Jon Sopel whose podcast in the last two weeks includes episodes such as:
-
“Should it be a crime to shout “jihad”?”
-
“The UK politics of Israel-Palestine”
-
“Is Israel about to commit war crimes?”
-
“How does Israel get its hostages back?”
-
“How far will Israel go in response to Hamas terrorism?”
-
The misinformation of war
-
Can there ever be peace in the Middle East?
-
Is Biden going to Israel a bad idea?
-
and the hilarious… “Are the Tories heading for extinction?”
It’s almost like it’s a very important talking point of mainstream media and all-compassing, impactful social issue that bleeds into every aspect of life, even entertainment and sports.
He says “I don’t go to the theatre and stand, head bowed for whatever the passing cause is.” … a respected journalist calling thousands of murdered innocent civilians a “passing cause” is abhorrent in itself but to assume that entertainment isn’t subject to current events is downright ridiculous (e.g. he even says he doesn’t “go to see the Barbie movie to remember victims of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh” when the movie itself was criticized by many for being too “political”)
Whose podcast is called The Newsagents, it’s their business to be informed and bring news to listeners. No one is going to their podcast to watch sport. It’s their job to be informed and deliver the news as they see it - they don’t signal affiliations and promote causes.
And that’s bad faith/disingenuous to wrap up that ‘passing cause’ comment as an attempt to diminish the seriousness of the situation in Gaza.

Everything is political, especially sports, especially football
Funny how Russian National team can’t compete but Israel can hahahaha if they are allowed we should also be
Apples and oranges
Is it though? Israel is allowed to defend itself against Hamas. No doubt about that. However, they perpetuate the climate in which groups like Hamas thrive. You can’t put people on a small strip of land which is basically an open air prison and be surprised when groups like Hamas start to get into power.
You can remove Hamas or an adjacent group but as long as you keep those very same circumstances in place a new group will rise.
Comparing Russia’s imperialist invasion of a former soviet state for one man’s imagined reputation to the incredibly complex and nuanced Israel/Palestine conflict, motivated by religion and terror from both sides. I fail to see any legitimate comparison.
Whataboutism
Football is the most political sport, and always has been. To deny that is denying the core and the spirit of the sport.
