I am a sophomore mechanical engineering student. I love engineering and I enjoy the classes, and when I was younger I always thought I would pursue engineering in college. However, there are 3 reasons im considering switching to a different school.

  1. Even though i really enjoy the work im doing in my classes, I am very bad at it. Im horrible at calculus and although I did well in IEA in my first year, I did terrible on my first Strengths of Materials exam. I know coursework and grading are pretty harsh here, but its very disheartening to always be doing worse than my peers and it’s starting to make me resent engineering
  2. I am very social and my other passion is studio arts. RPI is not exactly great for either of these, even though I am taking art classes at West Hall and I’ve met some great people, I can’t help but not like most of the people I’ve met. This obviously is the least important factor, but it does make me feel like im missing out on the college experience.
  3. The biggest reason: I am getting a lot of scholarships from RPI, but I just found out today that I will be graduating with some sizeable debt (Previously the bank had given us a much lower debt estimate). I know lots of people have student debt, I’m just concerned about how I’ll pay it back after I graduate since I seem to be horrible at engineering. I was already exploring other colleges before I even found out about the debt.

The advisors have given me useless advice on this subject and I just wanted to see what other people thought
