I’m kinda surprised that this is a discovery rather than a press release from the fabbing agency or equivalent…
Am I missing something?
are you surprised they didn’t tell you? They probably released a PR in their own language, in their own country that no one bothered to cover. Because claiming east is moving ahead in technology (despite sanctions) causes people to feel bad things in their gut.
As demonstrated by the downvotes without arguments on this post.
Achievements are achievements. It was mostly likely not publicized because the CCP saw strategic advantage in having an ability that the West didn’t know about. Now that it’s out there, expect the typical central party spin machine to crank up.
Interesting points, folks. I hadn’t thought of the geo political angle…
I guess it’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not the usual 3 letter agencies knew, but presumably Intel/TSMC/whoever is doing the real work these days is hoping to ‘copy their homework’, as such.
It is probably not important enough for any “hype”
The same thing happened last year with China’s first 7nm chip in a bitcoin miner. It was launched without any fanfare and only discovered by TechInsights a year later.

Love to see some competition. At least they will be in no danger of being bought by some US megacorp.
