I see guys talking shit about how Neymar never won a ballon d’or, but we can say that his competition being ronaldo and Messi it was hard for him to achieve that goal, what’s ya’ll opinion?

Several of his contemporaries were able to get 2nd or even 1st at the BOD, so I don’t think this is so much about the competition:

Iniesta, Benzema, Modric, Mane, Van Dijk and Lewandowski are 6 guys that got closer than Neymar.

Haaland is about to do the same (assuming he gets at least second this year).

He was never any better than Bale, Hazard, Robben etc. He was put on a pedestal because

    a) He was the emerging star of Brazil, the nation most synonymous with great footballers, and

    b) He played alongside Messi.

Woah there. I’m a chelsea fan and I’ll tell you right now he is NOT worse than hazard, nor was he worse than bale or Robben. Like in every single way he’s better than both of them.

The way he manipulated the ball and the things he could do… Messi is the best dribbler I’ve ever watched but Neymar is a close second. You can’t even call Ney an aesthetics merchant either because he has better stats than all the guys you mentioned.

He was an incredible footballer and in literally any other era of football he would have won 2 or 3 ballon d’ors. Just unlucky to be playing with Messi and Ronaldo.

We just don’t know. At Barca he looked like the real deal.

But outside of Spanish and English League you need to have a perfect season to even be considered.

Brasil and PSG always choking in the big games kind of prevented him from taking the next step.

Neymar never won the Ballon d’Or for the same reason that Iniesta never won it. When you play with Messi, you are never the best player on your team. Neymar was very good, certainly Ballon d’Or worthy, but going to PSG was what sealed the deal on him never winning the Ballon d’Or. If he didn’t and maybe went to a different club and won the ucl then maybe he could have won it, but that’s a hard maybe.

He definitely could have in 2016 if he maintained his form from the first half of the season. Him and Suarez were an amazing duo without Messi on the team

He’s lazy, never made his team win big, and fakes injuries from february to june.

    All of this doesn’t help.

Neymar is just as good, if not better, than any “avarage” ballon d’or winner. But you know… Messi and CR7, you Just cannot do much against that.

I mean, I think Neymar could have achieved a level much closer to them than he did, you can even argue He was at a higher level than them at some specific points (obviously Messi and Ronaldo primes are still higher, I’m talking about a specific point in time), but he never did, his carrer has been full of Injuries and inconsistencies, truly a shame.

That said I think He is still not done!🙏🏽 I think He will still help a lot The Brazilian team and I hope He leave Saudi nest season, it’s hard for him to in the ballon d’or tho, but maybe not impossible? I think if Benzema won at 34 He can still do it. It will depend on the comoetition as well.

No cause he is not a professional footballer. He played well for only 2 seasons. 2015/16. And 20-21. Beside those 2 years he just had a good separate moments with his bad attitude and long history of injury and nightlife. As a talent he would make it through the sky but he doesn’t have the commitment of leo and cris.

You’re going to get a bunch of shitty opinions on here that all they can do is hate or throw back handed compliments. I’d be surprised if most of this sub even watched him play pre PSG because that is longer than 2 years ago.

Regardless of how well he did at Barca it was clear Messi was going to get the credit for his work. We saw this with their comeback vs. PSG. That game was won because of Neymar. Messi and Suarez had literally given up and Neymar was the only one still fighting.

The biggest reason outside of that is fitness. He just can’t stay fit all season.

You’ve got a point. I’ve seen a Brazilian journalist talking about Neymar’s physical condition after this last injury, he did the math and Neymar was under injury treatment for more than 3 years during his career. To put it into perspective, Ronaldo was for 4 years. After the transfer to PSG the number of matches played decreased significantly. I think the answer is not gonna be a single factor one. Competing with Messi and C.Ronaldo, his professionalism or lack of, bad carrer decisions, injuries, timing, etc.

I’m Brazilian and out here, he’s never been an unanimity, both among journalists and the public, most because of his attitude, in the field and out. There’s a lot of things about his personal life that are talked about a lot here, that I don’t know if the rest of the world pays attention to, that helps painting the picture of how his personality might have influenced badly on his career.
