I’m running an extremely small unraid server for my home needs that’s served me well for the past 7+ years. Every now and then HDD fails and needs to be re-placed, no biggie.

However is it smart to have a pre-cleared HDD on premises when it fails, or is it better to wait for the failure and buy the device then? Asking it mainly from the longevity point of view - would a new drive just sitting on a shelf waiting its time degrade, hence making the back-up arguably a bad idea?
