Hi. I just wanted to let you all know that you’re bad influences.

Why?

Well, I went out and bought 100TB of HDDs (5x 20TB Exos x20). That doesn’t sound too crazy, except… I have no need at all for that amount of storage.

I bought a QNAP TS-464eU 8GB NAS that I’ll put four of them in. I toyed around with building my own NAS, but I really wanted this in my “server” (read: network) cabinet so small form factor and rack mountable was necessary. Finding an empty chassis that would fit was… Difficult.

The fifth one will go in my UDM Pro and act as storage for 4 Ubiquiti cameras I just ordered.

I don’t really have a question, but… What the hell am I going to do with all this space? My main desktop has 4TB of storage and I’ve used all of a few hundred gigabytes. I will be setting up a Plex server for friends and family to use, and will be populating my NAS with media for them to consume. I think I’ll try to convince the lady in my life to utilize some of the storage for family photos/videos and the like rather than using Google Drive/iCloud. Maybe store digitized important documents for us, too.

It’s going to take me forever to fill this up and justify my purchases.
