Hey everyone!
I’ve been deep diving into the world of handheld gaming devices and I wanted to share my thoughts with you all about the Miyoo Mini Plus and the RG35XX, along with their respective operating systems, OnionOS and GarlicOS.
Starting with the RG35XX running GarlicOS, I’ve got to say, it won me over despite lacking WiFi and OTA updates. The simplicity, coupled with incredible customization options, really stands out once you get the hang of it. I’ve dialed in my setup perfectly to my liking, and it’s become a real favorite.
On the flip side, I recently got some Miyoo Mini Plus units for free on Temu, kept one for myself and plan to gift the rest for Christmas. I was excited to experiment with OnionOS, but, to be honest, I hit a few snags. My first setup attempt was a bust, stuck in a loop for what seemed like an eternity. Thankfully, a fresh install sorted it out. It’s a tad more complicated to set up ROMs since you need to download cores from the package manager, but it’s not a big deal .
Aesthetically, OnionOS has some nice themes, but I still lean towards the look and feel of GarlicOS. I tried to customize my Miyoo Mini Plus to mimic the RG35XX’s interface, but the artwork overlap on the titles was a bit of an eyesore – I couldn’t figure out how to tweak the layout, and I’d love to swap the game titles to the right side for a cleaner look like on the RG35XX.
There are definitely pros to the Miyoo Mini Plus. The WiFi capability and OTA updates are huge pluses, and the tactile response of the start and select buttons is superior. The overall build quality is impressive, tempting me to make the full switch. However, placing it side by side with the RG35XX reveals that the latter boasts louder speakers and a brighter screen, which kind of dims my enthusiasm for the Miyoo Mini Plus.

Performance wise, GarlicOS feels snappier, and the RG35XX’s larger size makes for a more comfortable grip. Also, the shoulder buttons on the RG35XX are more user-friendly, while I keep misclicking them on the Miyoo Mini Plus. Plus, a quick press for a power-off on the RG35XX is just more convenient compared to the long-press on the Miyoo.
Both units have their merits, and I genuinely enjoy using them. If anyone knows how to reposition the game titles and box art on the Miyoo Mini Plus, I’m all ears!
In an ideal world, I’d merge these two – the build quality, battery, and buttons of the Miyoo Mini Plus, the RG35XX’s speaker, size, screen, and shoulder buttons, and the dream feature would be GarlicOS with WiFi support. Wouldn’t that be something?
Happy gaming!
