Good thing we don’t have sidewalks or bike paths… or anything useful after paying all that property tax.

My property taxes in Nanaimo have gone up by almost exactly double since June 2020

That story links to a slide deck with a breakdown of the numbers. It’s worth taking a look at to see where the money is being spent.

Yeah I looked at it. It seems pretty out of touch with reality.

For example they name the average house value at $808k. They assessed my house, one side of a duplex, at $848k for the 2022-23 tax year. My house is the cheapest in the area. All other houses were assessed well over $1M. That tax value not resale value. It’s not a special area… just an average Nanaimo neighborhood.

My property taxes for 2022/23 were over $4100. I paid $1900 for 2020.

I’m not saying that very infrastructure isn’t there… just that it’s pretty awful in so many areas. We lack of sidewalks and bicycle paths for example are a big issue. My kids have no way to walk or cycle to school for example… unless they walk on the street with the cars. But to be fair the city does install sidewalks and bicycle paths (poor but they’re there) when they do rework on things like the sewer.
