Soapbox started out as an alternative to Mastodon but has grown to encompass ActivityPub and nostr while being interoperable with both. In February 2023, the team launched the “Mostr” bridge, seamlessly connecting nostr to the ActivityPub Fediverse and enabling bidirectional communication between both protocols. This bridge exposes over 9.4M potential users in nostr’s target audience to nostr, many of whom have already left the Fediverse completely in favor of nostr.

I have two ideas i want to build on nostr.

      1. is the reddit clone. I’m scared to get to into it because there are like 4 other people doing this already. If they do a good job i’ll be wasting my time. But right now their ui is pretty bad with Amethys being this most likely not to suck. I may start seeing if I can get something out quickly. It’s actually easier than a lemmy clone because the backend is already done.
      2. a video sharing site. No one is doing this yet. I want a way to upload torrents and broadcast them on nostr. Would be a slower version of youtube. Would have to download the video first but we would not need the 100 billion dollar network of computers google has.

We could also build a bridge from lemmy to nostr and i’ve been thinking about how to accomplish it. I don’t really have a good mental map of how it would work yet.

Oh hell yeah dude I can’t wait definitely let us know when you complete the Reddit clone. Doesn’t amethyst have videos on their app already or is that something different?

I don’t know where those videos are coming from. So I’m not sure how it works. You can’t actually upload videos with nostr so it’s gotta be just their own video service. It’s really expensive to host videos like that I don’t think they can afford more than a few people uploading videos.

It just doesn’t really utilize BitTorrent very much. Unless everyone is watching the same video.

With peertube and With a gigabit upload connection you can basically have 200 people watching a 720p video at the same time.

That’s the best it can scale.

If everyone just downloaded the video first by making it a torrent and instead just shared the screenshot and description on the web server you could scale to the millions.

I really don’t know why no one has made a social media web site around uploading torrents of their personal videos.

For short form video a torrent probably doesn’t make sense but 10 minute plus videos it’s fine. You can even stream the video after a few minutes.

Honestly I think LBRY and Blockchains in general are an over complicated solution to almost nothing. It’s just a slow database made out of a immutable list.

I like Odyssey as a video sharing site because they Censor very little . I use it for my video uploads but the Blockchain features don’t ad any value. I mean just count how many other web clients use it. Like 0. If only one website uses a Blockchain there is nothing decentralized about it. A block chain with only one node is nothing but a database with extra steps.

Nostr doesn’t have any torrent technology. I was thinking just broadcast the magnet link to nostr relays with meta data. Maybe have the nostr client work as a torrent tracker too.
