I went to a doctor, a psychiatrist. She told me she couldn’t assess me for ADHD because the primary symptoms I was presenting were also symptoms of an anxiety disorder, which I definitely have, and once I had my anxiety disorder under control then she could do an ADHD assessment. So I’ve been working on that for the last year and wondering.
I’m not self-diagnosed and I’ve never claimed to have ADHD. I’m also not leaving, soooooo
Thanks for the encouragement. It’s been a year and my anxiety is a lot better now. I’ll see if I can’t get another referral and be seen again, maybe by a different psych.
This community is here to support all those who identify with the common struggles typically attributed to ADHD and it’s comorbid pathologies like anxiety disorders. You don’t need an official diagnosis to be a member of this community, and it’s perfectly fine to be in the questioning phase. I was hoping this was clear enough with the no gatekeeping rule but I guess I have to spell it out to people sometimes.
As far as the rules are here, yes theyre wrong. Gatekeeping is against the rules. BUT from a clinical and legal POV they are 100% correct. And unfortunately until the person they responded to does get a formal diagnosis, the accomodations and treatment necessary for coping with ADHD are witheld from them. It isnt equitable, it isnt fair, but thats the reality of the society we live in.
It depends on the country one lives in and medical systems that one is enrolled in. For instance, my GP was able to prescribe me Ritalin instead of a SSRI without me having any official diagnosis when he thought that my depression symptoms were related to it.
Then maybe you should schedule an appointment with a doctor and take the steps to get an assessment.
It’s great that you find comfort in the ‘life hacks’ but this isn’t an everyone feels this way kinda place.
Self diagnosis isn’t a diagnosis.

Maybe you should find a different doctor. My anxiety did not improve until I went on ADHD meds.
I have to agree very hard with this. My depression and anxiety were in a very large part caused by the unmanaged symptoms of ADHD.
When the ADHD got diagnosed and addressed the depression and anxiety mostly disappeared.

Thanks, Mr. Poopybutthole. I know I can always count on you.
You are gatekeeping. Don’t do that please.
