⢠In the episode âNo Small Partsâ Ransom explains to Captain Freeman that he calls the 2260s the âTOS Eraâ in honour of âThose Old Scientistsâ like Spock and and Scotty. Of course, this episode takes place in 2259, so clearly itâs time for a shake-up among the SNW production team.
⢠This episode was co-written by Kathryn Lyn, who also wrote âwej Dujâ and co-wrote âCharadesâ. She was initially hired to be a canon consultant for LDS, before becoming an executive story editor for that series in season two, and is currently the supervising producer for SNW season two.
⢠Johnathan Frakes directed this episode. Trekkies will recognize him as the director of several episodes and movies, including:
    ⢠âSub Rosaâ
    ⢠âMeridianâ
    ⢠âParturitionâ
    ⢠âProject Daedalusâ
    ⢠âTwo of Oneâ
    ⢠âStar Trek: Insurrectionâ
⢠Itâs Bradward Boimler! From Star Trek! Boimler is voiced, and performed in live action for the first time, by Jack Quaid.
⢠Boimler records the stardate as 58460.1, which, because LDS has a functioning stardate system, would put this adventure between âHear All, Trust Nothingâ (58456.2), and âTrusted Sourcesâ (58496.1).
⢠Itâs Beckett Mariner! From Star Trek! Mariner is voiced, and performed in live action for the first time, by Tawny Newsome.
⢠Itâs Samanthan Rutherford, and DâVana Tendi! From Star Trek! Rutherford and Tendi are voiced by Eugene Cordero, and NoĂŤl Wells respectively.
⢠Rutherford has a holo-imager identical to the one introduced in the VOY season five episode, âDroneâ when photography became one of the Doctorâs hobbies.
⢠The viewfinder display on the holo-imager is also accurate to what we see in VOY, starting with âInfinite Regressâ.
⢠Tendi has previously demonstrated being sensitive about the common association between Orions and piracy in the minds of her fellow Starfleet officers, going back to âCrisis Pointâ.
⢠As heâs being portaled by the portal, Boimler cries out, âRemember me!â which is also the title of a TNG episode in which a swirling energy vortex repeatedly tries to pull Doctor Crusher into itself.
⢠The portal dumps Boimler 122 years in the past.
⢠The SNW opening credits are recreated in the animation style of LDS, with some slight adjustments to the angles at which things are seen. Fortunately they kept in all the usual elements, such as the glowing space leach attempting to digest the nacelle, and the Koala.
⢠Pikeâs gives the stardate as 2291.6 in his captainâs log.
Episode | Stardate |
---|---|
âThe Broken Circleâ | 2369.2 |
âAd Astra per Asperaâ | 2393.8 |
âTomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrowâ | 1581.2 |
âAmong the Lotus Eatersâ | 1630.1 |
âAmong the Lotus Eatersâ | 1630.3 |
âAmong the Lotus Eatersâ | 1632.2 |
âCharades | 1789.3 |
âLost in Translationâ | 2394.8 |
⢠The USS Enterprise is en route to Setlik II to deliver a shipment of grain. This is the first direct mention of the planet, but Setlik III was established in âThe Woundedâ as the site of the Setlik III massacre during the Federation-Cardasssian War.
⢠The grain is tritriticale. In âThe Trouble With Tribblesâ there was a large amount of quadrotritricale grain being stored at Deep Space K-7 with the intent of transporting it to Shermanâs Planet, and in âMore Tribbles, More Troublesâ the Enterprise was escorting too transport ships loaded with quintotriticale grain, again to Shermanâs Planet.
⢠Number One explains to Pike that Boimlerâs badge is also a communicator. Pike first saw such a device when Section 31 agent Ash Tyler used his badge as a communicator in âThe Saints of Imperfectionâ.
⢠âBut flipping it openâs the best part.â Pike is objectively correct.
⢠âComputer end program.â Boimler attempts to shut down the past like a holodeck simulation.
⢠In âThe Inner Lightâ Picard gives the same command after awaking as Kamin in the memories imparted to him by the Kataan probe.
⢠In âShip in a Bottleâ Barclay tests to see if using that command will shut off a simulation of the USS Enterprise D after encountering Moriarty, and his being trapped in a simulation.
⢠The soles on Boimlerâs boots have the delta and star print on them that they do in animation on LDS.
⢠In âCupidâs Errant Arrowâ Boimler gets the computer to replicate him the coolest outfit ever in a âBoyâs size small,â and in âThe Least Dangerous Gameâ transporter chief Lundy accurately guesses Boimlerâs weight to be 61.2 kilograms, and asks him to volunteer for his afternoon life drawing class because they need âa skeletal boy.â However, Boimler is taller than every every member of the bridge crew, and thus we can only conclude that everyone serving aboard the Enterprise is tiny.
⢠âItâs a classic S/COMS operating system.â âSpacecraft Operations and Management Systemâ was seen on screen in âFirst Flightâ and the ENT showrunners consciously adapted the displays to feature more familiar elements from the TOS computers as the series continued.
⢠S/COMS would be considered a classic by Boimler, because by the time of âEncounter at Farpointâ, Starfleet has adopted LCARS as their operating system.
⢠âDefinitely wonât happen again, Worfâs honour.â Worf suffered discommendation and was stripped of his honour in âSins of the Fatherâ.
⢠âAnd, perhaps most important, donât make any attachments.â Laâan became attached to an alternate version of Sam Kirkâs brother James when they travelled to the past together, and she watched him get killed by a Romulan agent.
⢠âRiker!â Boimler swings his leg over the saddle in an imitation of the Riker maneuver, a practice he would have no doubt been witness to during his brief time serving aboard the USS Titan.
⢠According to an interview, the line was ad libbed by Jack Quaid and, of course, Jonathan Frakes was in the room directing when he did it.
⢠âIâm sorry, my friend Mariner, would be freaking out right now.â Though Tawny Newsome has stated in interviews what an important character Uhura is to her, Mariner has never mentioned Uhura in LDS. The only direct mention was actually by Boimler, when he was dehydrated talking to a hallucination of Sulu in âCrisis Point 2: Paradoxusâ.
⢠ââExplode,â you said?â In âArenaâ the Gorn were able to cause Spockâs tricorder to explode during their attack on the Cestus III outpost.
⢠An Orion scout ship arrives in orbit of Krulmuth-B. Itâs design is inspired by the Orion vessel seen in the remastered version of âJourney to Babelâ; in the original episode, the ship was merely a blip of spinning light.
⢠âSome Orion vessels are specifically designed to fool sensors.â Spock surmised that the Orion ship in âJourney to Babelâ either had a dense enough hull, or was cloaked in some other way to prevent sensors from being able to get specific readings.
⢠âWhat would come after the dash?â A bloody A, B, C, or D. Or E. Or F. OrâŚG unfortunately. Or J.
⢠Laâanâs statement implies that Starfleet has not yet adopted the custom of maintaining a Starshipâs legacy by preserving its designation and registry number.
⢠The Federation survey ship the Enterprise learned crashed on Talos IV in âThe Menagerie, Part Iâ, the SS Columbia, had a registry of NC-5940-1, as seen on the printout of their distress call.
⢠Boimler built a model of an Orion scout ship in a bottle. Building ships in bottles is a hobby he shares with Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Miles OâBrien, as per âBooby Trapâ. Lieutenant Carey also spent all his time aboard the USS Voyager between seasons one and seven building model of the Voyager in a bottle, which we see in âFriendship Oneâ after his death. âShips in bottles. Great fun.â
⢠The episode âShip in a Bottleâ does not feature any ships in bottles.
⢠âHe was so excited to see me, that for a second it felt like maybe my future wasnât so bad.â Pikeâs future, so far as heâs aware, is ending up in a disfigured and living in a life support chair, able to communicate only through beeps after being exposed to delta radiation, which we see in âThe Menagerie, Part Iâ and he sees in âThrough the Valley of Shadowsâ.
⢠âI know, but like smaller jetpacks.â In âA Moral Star, Part Iâ we see the Protogies using significantly smaller thruster packs than the ones seen in âThe Vulcan Helloâ or âStar Trek: The Motion Pictureâ.
⢠Ortegas tells Boimler sheâs going to give him all the credit for the birthday party theyâre going to throw for Pike. In âTemporal Edictâ captain Freeman instituted the Boimler Effect, encouraging officers to add buffer time as needed into their scheduled tasks, something which Boimler also did not want credit for, but we see is his legacy far into the future in that same episode.
⢠Chapel assures Boimler he is not responsible for Spockâs recent exploration of his emotions. Spock broke his Vulcan mental conditioning in order to fight the Gorn in âAll Those Who Wanderâ.
⢠âIâve read literally every book about Spock and they mention his upbringing on Vulcan, his pet sehlat, his relationship with his mom and his dadââ The books on Spock are apparently far more forthcoming about his life than he is; in âJourney to Babelâ Kirk was unaware of the fact that Spockâs father was one of the most respected Federation ambassadors, and in âYesteryearâ after watching I-Chaya die while in the past, Spock only told Kirk that a pet died, not his own childhood pet.
⢠âFor all I knew you were dead, or stuck in a dystopian San Francisco in the middle of a riot.â Mariner is referring to the Bell Riots, as seen in âPast Tense, Part IIâ.
⢠âHave you noticed their references are weirdly specific?â Number One is also concerned about my going way over the character limit on this post.â
⢠Boimler power walks away after being startled by Number One. He claimed that power walking is more efficient in âEnvoysâ. Apparently Section 31 does it.
⢠Mariner tells Uhura that while sheâs known for being a super-translating space adventurer in the future, part of that reputation is that sheâs carefree. In episodes like âCharlie Xâ and âThe Man Trapâ we see Uhura singing in the recreation room, and flirting with Spock.
⢠Mariner performs the Picard Maneuver when standing up.
⢠On her PADD, Uhura is looking at examples of the Bajoran and Cardassian alphabets, which are labeled as such. This is the first indication that the Federation had made contact with either civilization prior to the TNG era.
⢠There is a comatose Cardassian being held by the automated shipyard in âDead Stopâ, but no one actually really sees him.
⢠Starbase Earhart was first mentioned in âThe Samaritan Snareâ when Captain Picard tells Wesley the story of his being stabbed through the heart by a Nausican, and we first see the base in âTapestryâ when Q sends Picardâs consciousness back through time to that event.
⢠âTapestryâ is also the first mention of dom-jot.
⢠Mariner describes dom-jot as âA billiards game that Nausicans are terrible at, but love to bet on for some reason.â We see Mariner playing dom-jot against Nausicans at Starbase Earhart in âWeâll Always Have Tom Parisâ.
⢠Pelia and Boimler share a moment staring at the warp core. Boimler has a long established history of being a fan of warp cores, going back to his first episode, âSecond Contactâ.
⢠Peliaâs quote, âI always pretended to be someone I wanted to be, until finally I became that someoneâŚor he became me,â* is paraphrasing Cary Grant.
⢠âDonât yell Q, they havenât met him yet.â Q first reveals himself in âEncounter at Farpointâ
⢠âThey had kind of a Trelene thing going on.â Trelene appears in âThe Squire of Gothosâ and, so far no where else.
⢠The Enterprise crew starts expressing enthusiasm for the past, specifically the NX-01.
⢠Pike mentions that he would be excited to set foot on Archerâs Enterprise. In âThese Are the VoyagesâŚâ we learn that he is the one who wrote the parameters for a popular holo-simulation where the user plays the role of the NX-01âs chef.
⢠Laâan says she loves grapplers, which first appeared in the ENT premiere, âBroken Bowâ.
⢠Ortegas claims, âIâm a huge fan of Travis Mayweather. First pilot of the NX-01*.â Presumably there had to be at least one.
⢠Uhura mentions Hoshi Sato having spoken 86 languages. In âTwo Days and Two Nightsâ itâs established that Hoshi learned 38 languages before having left Earth, and that she knows âabout 40â as of that episode.
⢠I believe this is the first time the Fleet Museum is referred to as the Starfleet History Museum, but both locations have the NX-01, as per âThe Bountyâ.
⢠We learn that Number One is featured on a Starfleet recruitment poster, including the words âAd Astra per Asperaâ which was the motto of the United Earth Starfleet and, we learn, of personal importance to Number one in the episode âAd Astra per Asperaâ.
⢠The poster featuring Number One was not seen among the recruitment material Mariner and Boimler took when they set up their booth on Tulgana IV in âReflectionsâ.
⢠It was established that Tendi is the Mistress of the Winter Constellations in âWeâll Always Have Tom Parisâ.
⢠Itâs Jack Ransom! From Star Trek! Ransom is voiced by Jerry OâConnell.
⢠âOh, Numero Una, hottest first officer in Starfleet history.â Rebecca Romijn and Jerry OâConnell are married.
⢠Drinking the Orion delaq causes the Enterprise crew to experience visual hallucinations similar to what Mariner, and Boimler went through after being exposed to nitrous oxide in âRoom for Growthâ. Tendi was immune.
Just wanted to thank you for these posts! So great to have you over in the Lemmyverse.
I agree! This was the first one of !USSBurritoTruck@startrek.websiteâs posts Iâve seen, and also one of my favorite episodes yet. I just read it over my lunch, and I think I will need to re-read it again when I get home - just in case I missed anything. Thank you !USSBurritoTruck@startrek.website!
Worf suffered discommendation and was stripped of his honour in âSins of the Fatherâ.
By the time Boimler is around Worf had gotten his honour backâŚand lost it again, and got it back⌠I think. Itâs hard to keep track. But his family honor was restored in "Redemptionâ for helping Gowron in the civil war.
Yeah, I guess being chancellor means you get to flick anybody elseâs honour off and on like a light switch.
Get klingons to do whatever you want with this one weird trickâŚ
Oh, câmon, why do you have to do Frakes so dirty like that?
âBut flipping it openâs the best part.â Pike is objectively correct.
Okay, that part is true.
Oh, câmon, why do you have to do Frakes so dirty like that?
I donât know what you mean, I think Frakes did a great job directing those episodes.
Pike mentions that he would be excited to set foot on Archerâs Enterprise. In âThese Are the VoyagesâŚâ we learn that he is the one who wrote the parameters for a popular holo-simulation where the user plays the role of the NX-01âs chef.
I donât recall the programâs author being mentioned, much less it being attributed to Pike. đ¤
Itâs right after Troi quotes Dataâs speech from âFamilyâ. That line always gets me.
Brilliant! Keep these lists coming!
