This is what happens when the incurious attain cursory knowledge.

They can’t imagine not having an opinion until actually knowing things.

But seriously though. As an old fart, this is one of the worst things about the internet to me:

It has made people completely incapable of just going “I don’t know enough about this so I have no opinion on it” because they wikipediad that shit, or even worse got it from some debate-pervert streamer with a helping of epic memes

I recall someone semi-recently online who acted like I was trying to dunk on them when I was just being staunch about the facts and about knowing what they’re talking about on the subject matter. Genuinely surprised me at the time because I wasn’t even thinking of it in that way. Probably one of the most important things I had to do in learning this stuff was listening more and “having takes” less. I still try to keep an eye on it because it’s not something I can just unlearn like a switch flip; the world doesn’t need me being “a communist but still arrogant and inventing wildly.”

You’re on the right path then.

Stay humble, and back out from discussing shit you don’t know about. People will notice and respect you for it.

being “a communist but still arrogant and inventing wildly.”

          I feel personally attacked!

No but seriously, as someone who followed a path which was roughly militant online atheist -> lib debate fetishist -> arrogant communist with nothing but cursory knowledge, I really sympathize with having to work to not fall back into past bad habits. I often find myself furiously typing long comments, then stopping and asking “do I even know this?” or “what am I trying to achieve here?” and then deleting it in shame.

Following in the footsteps of Enlai and Xiaoping. Pretty soon he’s gonna be invading other countries like Vladimir.

I saw the first response video and stopped after a few minutes, because while Second Thought gave a definition of authority/authoritarianism (giving a definition really should be the standard for every single discussion anywhere, forever), Anark just used his own definition to argue against it. I’m kinda glad Second Thought doesn’t do response videos. It doesn’t go anywhere with these kinda people.

I have literally never seen an attempted anarchist “takedown” of On Authority that didn’t fall into the trap Engels identified of just renaming things. Profound thinkers indeed.

Everytime I see someone do this or write “CCP”, I parse it like an America “expert” saying “President Mr Joe is dating a strong challenge from the Party of the Republic in the next election for Chancellor.”

Just ignore Engel’s takedown of our pitiful ideology.

What outcome do they think would’ve happened if Lenin hadn’t “betrayed the revolution?”

Marxism could have been like anarchism. A bunch of people posting online about how “pure” and “non-authoritarian” they are, and occasionally going out into the real world to do “mutual aid” (read: knocking over trash cans and spray painting “fuck the state” on a wall somewhere).
