Why on earth does anybody care about what Ubisoft does
Shit company shit games been that way for almost 20 years
and racism, apparently
You hate to see it, folks
It’s so odd to me that anybody is putting much thought into this without knowing what the narrative purpose of the choice is. Take shogun, for example - this has a British protagonist (although arguably Mariko is the protagonist). But this serves a strong narrative purpose - at the very least, it is a convenient (albeit common) device which allows you to spell out the culture, background, etc. for the audience under the auspices of that stuff being told to the character who is also unfamiliar with it. And from a plot perspective, that white character also helps fill out the christianization of Japan subplot.
It could very well be the same with AC. That they picked a black samurai outsider could be a relevant plot point. That it is this one in particular - who had close contact with Nobunaga - may also be central to the plot and story they want to tell.
Gamergaters seem to hate every single game despite artists making it abundantly clear they don’t want to follow the Haye’s code, yet they act like they are crowned as the standing authority on all video games.
Can’t these assholes just take up golf like the rest of the upper-middle-class snobs? Geekdom isn’t for you. Own us libs and gatekeep us from golf or something.
They got judged by the golf snobs, that’s why they’re here!
MFW some of the worst CHUDs have been born because despite being bourgeoisie, the super rich laugh at them like they’re filthy poors just like us.
Pork-on-pork violence is both amusing and terrifying.
but also
Any historical depiction is automatically ahistorical and always reflects the ideologies of the time, this includes Ubisoft specifically choosing a black protagonist and this also includes the ahistorical Western white-man-dominated depictions of history these chuds were exposed to as teenagers and internalized as ‘correct’ and ‘default’.
It’s kinda frustrating to an extent that either side in this stupid gamer debate claims some closer simulacrum of history.
I completely agree and this is something everyone should remember. Even so, it’s fair to say that there is a spectrum when it comes to the ahistoricity of any given historical depiction. A work can be a bit off despite the honest attempt of the artist to make it historically accurate or it can be a grotesque mischaracterization that distorts the context beyond any semblance of the historical reality. G*mers tend to demand the latter while pretending they’re the ones championing accuracy.
chuds are using historical accuracy as a cudgel again; pointing out Yasuke’s historicity isn’t claiming that ass creed is telling a true story.

though, next Assassins Creed game better be set in colonial Brazil with Zumbi dos Palmares as the protagonist or in Haiti with Dessalines as the protag
i was thinking chinese guy in the old west since the are stepping up for asian male representation. Kill some railroad barons, guns exist but still kinda suck, etc.
Freedom Cry DLC for ACIV let you kill slaveowners and free slaves in Haiti. They libbed it up unfortunately, but it was still pretty great getting to to do that.

Every time I see this discourse I’m reminded to hop back into Guilty Gear. Nagoriyuki is such an awesome character I’m sad it took until the creator’s supposed final project to show up.
Xrd and Strive have immaculate aesthetics but I’m a Tekken/Street Fighter weenie and I cannot abide GG’s controls. It makes me so mad
I don’t follow gamer drama or even really care about video games but this reminds me of someone I used to know who tried to argue with me when San Andreas came out that if you’re going to make the main character black you need to also have create a character.
Is it possible to choose gender? I liked to pick Kassandra and Eivor. It was refreshing and I liked how they were portrayed.
yeah there’s an Evie to Yasuke’s Jacob
My main issue is that I’d prefer an AC character to NOT be historical because of the whole shadow history vibe. But honestly I’d like even more offbeat protagonists and cooler settings. I want, like, a game set during the last days of the Inca with a Maori Protagonist.
