I do not trust any “livability” statistic that lists Frankfurt as the most livable city in Germany.
Also, the chart does not give its selection criteria. Medium sized cities to cities on the smaller side are completely missing. I get not including towns, that would overwhelm the graph.
Then again, what even is a city, what sets it apart from a town? Different regions in Europe have vastly different definitions of that, with the UK’s definition being particularly notable for how useless it is.
Some of the others high up on that list are equally absurd. OK, Zürich and Geneva are maybe nice if you are a millionaire, but for everyone else they are absolutely unaffordable.
At least they have somewhat proportional wages, compared to, for example, Dublin or München.
Perhaps the liveability index gives extra points for:
- An open drug scene full of crackheads at the main rail station
- A lot of Gangsta rappers from the city
- Being a hub of financial crime
So Frankfurt scored well on those
Don’t forget about all the Nazis with their robot dogs that make up the police force over there.
There just isn’t another way to keep the place nice and safe without them.
It has Paris in there, lmao.
If someone forced me at gunpoint to live in Paris, I’d wrestle the gun off of them and then shoot myself.

I feel exactly the same about Paris.
This has got to be one of the worst designed charts I’ve seen
Why make it circular? Are normal bar charts not good enough?
How is Frankfurt ending up so high on that list?!
Which Frankfurt?
- Frankfurt am Main
- Frankfurt (Oder)
- Stadt Frankfurt (Sachsen Anhalt)
- Ježkov (german name Frankfurt)
- Kap Frankfurt (Russia)
You‘re right, I thought of Frankfurt am Main, but if it’s one of the others they could be livable. I only have been to Frankfurt am Main, and thats about the last place I would like to end up…
It has a reason why Germans constantly joke about it.
If nothing is specified it’s usually Frankfurt am Main
It’s definitely am Main
Why would they include Frankfurt an der Oder but not Frankfurt am Main? I’m pretty sure they mean the latter and this graph is nonsense…
“Drugs” is the only thing I can think of.
How is Berlin (see ach_berlin.txt) higher than Munich?
Came here to ask the same
And all other European cities are less liveable than Kyiv? I find that hard to believe
They do not monitor all cities in Europe, the listed ones are the 41 cities analysed by the EIU.
Dresden, for example, isn’t listed. I’m pretty sure it has fewer problems with missile and suicide drone attacks than Kyiv does.
Some would make the bold claim that a hot war doesn’t make for a very good local vibe…
Pretty insane that Moscow and St. Petersburg only rank a little higher than a the Ukrainian capital that is suffering from drone attacks and power outages on the regular.
This ranking looks worthless and they’re very vague on how they make it, you can only get a free summary.

Indicators
EIU’s liveability index ranks cities based on more than 30 indicators across five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
https://www.eiu.com/n/campaigns/global-liveability-index-2024/
They don’t seem to care about cost which is huge for most people…
It’s really vague how the study deals with purchasing power.
Of course, but lets not add some sort of xenophobic rating in the mix.
Kyiv is in a literal warzone. I would expect it’s livability to be much lower.
It’s kind of an insult to Istanbul at this point.
I love that this equally pisses off all Europeans though haha. Personally I can see how Copenhagen is high and oof yeah why Kyiv is last (would love to see it bounce back up after they win).
Non Parisian french are fuming rn
Theres a lot german citys i would prefer over Frankfurt and Düsseldorf(and also over munich and hamburg especially since munich is the most expensive City in germany)
Hmm, I think Istanbul is pretty great, if you don’t mind the high inflation and the insane amount of inhabitants. (16 Million!) I would actually love to live here for a year or two.
And Prague is an amazing city and very cheap to live, I can’t see why it should be worse than Berlin for example. Also Munich, while pretty great is so fucking expensive to live, it’s not even funny. And that’s already by German standards. I think Frankfurt gets a bad reputation by many Germans, it’s a pretty ok and diverse big city. Wouldn’t put in on the first place in Germany though.
All in all a pretty strange list.
I suspect being very expensive was a positive criteria in that study as it keeps the riffraff out /s
Dublin? Who would think it’s a nice city to live in? It’s nothing but a very expensive kip.
Brought to you by the institute for made up numbers.
Ah, Vienna.
Baltics don’t exist I guess
Karelia is in it…
