Our volunteer cherry tomatoes have gone hard this past week, putting on tons of new growth and starting to fruit as well! Our slicers kind of gave up with the hot spell but are back to flowering and I’m looking forward to some really juicy ones.
This past week has seen me doing more forestry than gardening, though I personally conflate the two (I’m just pruning some rather large plants). I’m in the process of typing a write up to some video I shot which details what I’m doing - I’d like to post the video for you all, but I want to accommodate those of you who don’t have the time or desire for ~19 minutes of me talking.
Here is a picture of a bee napping on some Joe Pye weed:
Planted a bunch of Summer lilacs in my garden. About 20 of them, but they are only at about 30cm in height. So it will be some time before I can really enjoy them.
They’re definitely worth the wait; I plant several ones that size every year to surprise my wife with flowers in new places the next year or two. They can put on a surprising amount of growth, and going with ones that small means you didn’t upset your soil life too much by planting, so great job!
I’ve started a bunch of mesclun to keep the Baby Greens Train rolling! The garden is providing green beans, and the torrent of tomatoes has just begun. The Shishito peppers are coming in nicely, and the ground cherries have started dropping off the plants!
It’s been cool and wet enough recently (thank goodness) that some self-seeded lettuce and arugula from the plants that bolted at the end of spring have sprouted - I had been missing the fresh greens!
I’ve also been enjoying seeing the joe-pye weed, goldenrod, and all the other summer wildflowers in full bloom!
Nice! Those fast growing self seeders make for bountiful gardens
I finally started on a project to improve the flowerbeds in front of my house. I removed the arborvitae and whatever was growing on the ends, replacing them with chaste tree shrubs. I also planted a line of bee balm in front. Hopefully they all take!
Hey nice! I think that post was one of our first few interactions with each other. It’s awesome to know you’re working on it and I can’t wait to see some of your photos - particularly when that bee balm starts advertising itself to your locals!
Post the video!
I will… My wife came home with boatloads of baby stuff we had to sort through so I didn’t get to work on the write up for folks. By way of an apology, here are two of the books she got
