So, I recently attempted to switch fully to Linux with Fedora 38 (I already had it on my laptop [old Dell Latitude with iGPU] and wanted to use it on my desktop [i5-9600k + GTX1650D6]).

To start, I download the Fedora Media Writer, flash my USB and boot the live installation. First of all, I had to unplug my Nvidia GPU to force my PC to use the iGPU because Gnome was just freaking out. I then launch the Installation software but it wouldn’t open, after some investigation I find out it’s because I have to fully disable secure boot (delete keys, etc). After that, the installation process works flawlessly.

I plug my Nvidia card back in, but make sure not to plug my monitor in it so that it still defaults to iGPU. I enable the rpmfusion repos in Software and install the proprietary drivers from there. I restart, reenable secure boot (on “Custom OS” config) and it just works.

With everything more or less stable, I start adding extensions to Gnome, downloading software, etc… I play a bit with Lutris, Bottles and Steam Proton to get my games working alright, I set up my OneDrive with Insync, install drivers for my drawing tablet and my controller. Then comes the time to make my drawing software work on Linux. After several hours, I manage to get it working via Proton on Lutris. But… I can’t get my license verified because the online-DRM verification login process just won’t work. Turns out it’s because I need Edge to be installed in the same Windows sandbox. But I can’t get it working no matter what I try… I absolutely needed this software to work. Tired and hopeless, I make the decision I didn’t want to make : go back to Windows 11.

My experience with Fedora was amazing, most of the things worked just as I expected and it was perfect, it ran so well compared to Windows, but the thing that ruined it all is compatibility… And the worse thing is it’s not Fedora (or Linux) 's fault…
