Game developers aren’t saying that Baldur’s Gate 3 is a fluke because they’re lazy and don’t know how to make real games anymore. They’re saying it’s a fluke because it IS a fluke.
Just look at the numbers for Atomic Heart. 18,000 peak concurrent players. This game is perfectly well reviewed no bullshit gameplay without predatory microtransactions.
Too much of an unknown indie game for you? Try Hogwarts Legacy. Peak concurrent players 270,000. With absolutely insane word of mouth, brand recognition and marketing. It fell off by 75% in a month. Again, good reviews, solid gameplay, no crazy microtransactions.
Developers make good games like Baldur’s Gate 3 all the time. Nobody forgot how to do it. It’s just nowhere even remotely as profitable as doing live service games with recurring dips into the player wallet.
All three of these games above are going to make a bare fraction of the income of a game like Diablo Immortal or Destiny 2 over their lifetime.
The only way to stop these kinds of business practice is to STOP playing and STOP paying. And it will NEVER happen.
Players love that shit.
