I know hundreds of thousands of former enslaved people fought on the side of the Union, but what about white Southerners? Specifically, from the states that seceded rather than the border states. We’re there significant numbers of Southern Unionists or abolitionists who joined the Union military either by fleeing northwards or joining when Union troops arrived in their area?
