So, my dad lived most of his life in Norway. The first time I came over at 7 he and I went eel “fishing” with his childhood friend in the river Glomma.

However, looking back, I wonder what we were actually catching. We caught them in cages lined with netting, similar to crab fishing, but it was my job to catch the rogue ones that fell out.

I learned the eel-holding trick of using my thumb knuckle to hold them because they were so slimy.

I don’t think they were hagfish, which are very, very slimy, but as far as I know most eels don’t produce slime. I asked my dad recently, he said they were “nine-eye” or “ni-oye” I suppose.

Also, I was told those eels would be eaten but in my many times I’ve visited Norway I’ve never seen eel on any menu. Are they exported to the UK for jellied eels? Are they used as unagi in Norwegian sushi restaurants?

Any help is much appreciated!
