We bought a house several years ago and when we moved in we just kind of threw the networking stuff I already had where it kind of worked and I’m hoping to improve the network experiece as both my wife and I work from home and spend most of the day doing presentations/leading conference calls. I currently have a USG and a USW-8-60W switch located in the mechanical room off of the garage along with a few servers. The switch powers a UAP-AC-IW-PRO(deprecated) in my living room that my TV is plugged into as well as a UAP-AC-PRO that is mounted in the ceiling of my garage. . I’ve got approximately 100 clients on all of my wireless networks, mostly IOT devices on their own 2.4Ghz VLAN. There is also a pool and large patio out back so wifi in the back of the house if fairly important as well. My wife and I both have a few months off following the birth of our daughter so I figure now is a great time to get our network in order.
The wifi tends to be spotty throughout the house and I’m not sure if it’s settings related or if it is related to the placement of the APs, but I figured that should probably be my first step. I’m hoping to add a few network drops to the 2 kid’s rooms as well as the upstairs office. I’ve watched several videos as read countless tutorials, but I can’t seem to find much that discusses how multiple floors factor in. Additionally, my wife has given me the go-ahead to purchase anything I might need for this project so I figured at a minimum I should upgrade the UAP-AC-IW-PRO. The location of the network gear isn’t really negotiable, but I can run cable just about anywhere with good access to my attic as well as my crawl. I am attaching a very basic floor plan of my house as well as indicators of where I currently have my equipment located. Obviously the 2 offices are priority, followed by living room, master, and back porch/patio. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where I should start as well as if it makes sense to upgrade any of my equipment? I have gig fiber and want to be sure I’m getting the most out of it while eliminating any frustrations in coverage.
Thanks in advance!
