I am the guardian of my friend who is in the hospital and also has Alzheimer’s. Her live-in aide was sitting with her in the hospital whilst I was at work today. One of the nurses told the aide to change her dirty diaper. There was nothing for her to changer her, no wipes etc. plus she does not work at the hospital. She sat in shit for over an hour. The live in texted me around 1:15 pm and asked I call the nurse to have them check her breathing. The nurse came in checked and told her the patient was breathing fine. They did not listen to her lungs or examine her. This happened twice. Two different people told the aide that she was ok. I got there around 6 pm and she was not ok. Breathing was very labored and she had a wheeze to it now. I saw my friend last night and she was not breathing like this. Nurse came in and gave her a breathing treatment she seemed worse after. The nurse was telling me about her 02 levels and I was texting the nurse from the elder care company giving an update plus asking for advice as I was scared. The nurse said, “I hope I am not being recorded” and then left the room. She came back in and I said I don’t know why you think I was recording you but I was not. She said something about you never know these days. I was shocked but more upset by the fact that my friend is still struggling to breathe. She leaves. My friends breathing isn’t getting better and I use the call button. The techs couldn’t find her nurse and she started getting red and she was grasping to breathe. She seemed like she was in distress. I was panicking and wanted to call 911 but I was in a friggin hospital. A supervisor came in and was trying to get it under control. It was change of shift so one nurse asked me to go in the hallway and give him patient history. I told him what had been happening and he asked another nurse to listen in. They called a doctor and didn’t get an answer then they told me not to be scared but they were calling a code so she would be seen asap. The one nurse said to follow him in the room and he had me next to him out of the way. I am so frustrated and angry with the hospital for what has gone on the last few days. I am so grateful for the three nurses who listened and truly took care of my poor friend. Sorry this is all over the place and thank you for letting me vent!
