You do not trust any company. You trust your friends, your partner, your children.

A company is about making money, if fucking you over gets them money, they’ll do it unless forced not to.

Not to disagree with you, but I would say Valve has a good track record of specifically not trying to fuck people over and they tend to make high quality games. But that can always change so it is good to always keep that in mind.

Yet, they popularized loot box mechanics and NFTs. Steam acts a big giant DRM. It puts free mods behind its DRM as well, since you can’t get mods in the Workshop, unless you own the game on Steam. It has enabled sneaky regional pricing for years. There’s no guarantee what will happen to your library if Steam servers go down one day. And there’s very little content curation, which means its catalogue has thousands of scam games, some of which are probably used for money-laundering and online/phone scam purposes.

Yeah, they are not trying to aggressively milk every single penny from every single pocket, but some of their decisions have caused great harm to the gaming community. And it doesn’t help that they are a giant monopoly.

I agree. Keep in mind anything I post I may or may not agree with, and I am always willing to change my mind with feedback I get from here. I post things here because I am interested in listening to discussion.

I’d pick Valve over most game companies, but they are still a company, and I predict Valve will become worse over time unless they are bought or go under as the tendencies of capitalism lead toward greater monopolization. I have accepted that everything that I like and was produced in a capitalist system will be rotten and spoiled eventually.
