I do photography/ videography and am in the search for a backup solution.

For photography, I work off an external 1TB SSD (photo library + Lightroom catalogs) which I back up to Google Drive. For videography, I work off an external 2TB SSD which I back up to an external 5TB HDD (WD Passport Ultra).

I work off external SSDs because I frequently switch between a Windows computer and MacBook.

In the past, I used a QNAP TS-231P2. What I didn’t like about it:

  • No native exFat support. Driver needs to be purchased.
  • LAN transfer speeds could be faster (uploading files via the USB-ports on the NAS is way faster).
  • Takes a long time to clone the drive.
  • It’s loud.

What would you recommend if I only need something for backup? I don’t plan on working off the NAS or using it as remote storage.

  1. better/ newer NAS
  2. external HDD enclosure (e.g. UGREEN USB 3.0 SATA Harddisk Case)
  3. something completly different

Disk space needs to be at least 10TB.

Big thanks!
