Explanation: During Caesar’s first consulship, when he was just an up and coming populare politician, the Senate managed to worm in an archconservative as his co-consul, Bibulus. When Caesar attempted to pass some pretty minor land reform, removing all the radical elements that the conservatives in the Senate railed against previously, Bibulus still threatened to veto it. But as the Roman Republic was highly procedural, Bibulus was assaulted by an angry mob before he could exercise his veto, and spent the rest of the year locked up in his own house, declaring the omens unfavorable every day, and being totally ignored. Good going, Bibulus! Top tier politiking!
