racist, sexist and homophobic jokes were socially acceptable even in relatively progressive circles.
transgender people even existing was still a taboo. Giving them any rights was completely unthinkable.

A number of (european) countries had recognised same sex partnerships in one form or another during the 90s.
Not that you’re wrong in general, but please don’t bundle the always-so-backward Germany with the rest of us.
