He still catches up and kills/captures everyone. He is only thwarted by his own, highly trained soldiers that don’t want to waste space laser “ammunition”???
Star Wars lore is completely fucked to shit after Disney…
But basically, the lore behind things called ‘blasters’ and ‘turbolasers’ is that they are not actually lasers, they are bolts of plasma.
… Some… how… the weapons take some kind of gas, convert it to plasma, expel this plasma, and … some…how… the weapon basically encapsulates the plasma ‘bolt’ in a self contained and self cohering magnetic field.
Sort of like a handheld, miniature version of how toroidal fusion reactors, or particle accelerators work in our world.
This is also why shields work in lore, most of them are usually explained as magnetic forcefields.
Do not try to run the numbers on the physics of this, none of it actually makes any real world sense.
…
But anyway, general rules of thumb:
Larger weapons fire more plasma in a bolt.
Larger weapons fire larger plasma bolts that magnetically cohere longer, thus have greater range before decohereing.
Different colored plasma bolts are usually? explained by different kinds and compositions of … some kind of fuel.
… If I remember right, in either the first or second rogue squadron game, you target tibanna gas refineries (cloud city / bespin’s main economkc reason for existing), and there are some voice lines that say that tibanna gas is a vital ingredient in the production of most kinds of blaster ammo.
So… what this all means is that the concept of detachable magazines with limited amounts of ‘ammo’ does kinda make sense; the magazines are full of some kind of magic space fuel pressurized gas, that’s converted, by the weapon, into the plasma bolt.
But this also means that blasters need an actual energy source or mechanism to do then actual work of transforming the gas into plasma, magnetically enveloping and cohereing it into a bolt, and then expelling it…
…so they either need some kind of auxilliary, rechargeable battery type system, or something akin to a starter engine in a car… or some other kind of basically magic nonsense type of energy source like the kyber crystals in lightsabers.
The specifics of this are vague and all over the place in the lore, even before Disney, but I think that’s a decent summary.
Thank you for helping trigger the memory of rogue squadron, a game I spent far too much time playing. I always thought the energy/ammo were contained together in the equivalent of magazines. I vaguely remember the shadows of the empire game, and maybe the jedi knight series, having ammo packs that look a lot like boxes of ammo you’d find in a store today.
I mean it is a science fantasy world, but I’d imagine if you get into the gritty realistic parts energy weapons still use… y’know… energy. And when you’re part of a massive space fascist bureaucracy, there’s some number cruncher counting turbolaser bolts.

IMO i always interpreted that as ‘hold fire, its a decoy get ready for the the real one’…
