Wow!
Aw that sucks. I sent in $20, was going to do it yearly. We need to pay for software people! Yes even on Linux!
It was way too aggressive. ArcMenu simply shows a Gnome notification that you can click away where they tell you that it has been updated and that you can donate. It doesn’t need to be more than that.
Good on the developer. The users complaining are really a bunch of spoiled children. Someone provides you with a free product, a donation button is introduced and you start whining incessantly.
I’m not a user of this software, but reading the ticket I know I’d be annoyed too. I was when Windows 11 changed task bar behavior to worse.
- It dumped and animated icon in my panel in the primary position where my most used launcher normally is
- There was no clear way to remove this intrusion into my workflow - the context menu item of “Donation options” was not something that appeared to give me that option
From that, seems like it was a disruptive donation button rather than an informational side thing.
They opened the ticket with thanks and appreciation, and made respectful factual arguments. Far from “whining incessantly”.
100 % agree. I don’t mind developers asking for donations, but this seemed too intrusive. Especially with the 20-second timeout to dismiss it. The developer also seemed to have a bit of an attitude in their response.

The initial user yes, but read the rest of the comments. There are a few friendly ones voicing real concerns, but the majority I’d definitely not place in the “nice” or “constructive” category.
Users in general everywhere are.
Sad but understandable. I saw the donation button but I don’t have spare money atm.
Oh shit, I didn’t notice there was one going on and oh shit² that they are quitting.
Good luck GNOME users! If Xfce ever added a donation button I would not be donating again.
