Summary

Trump’s trade wars and tariffs are hitting his own voters the hardest, with retaliatory levies from China, Canada, and Europe targeting industries in Trump-supporting states.

A New York Times analysis found that nearly 8 million Americans, mostly Trump voters, work in affected sectors like farming, steel, and manufacturing.

While some remain loyal, others are voicing frustration over job losses and economic strain. States like Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Indiana are particularly vulnerable.

Cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security could further impact Trump’s base.

If I were American I would worry more about the US turning into a fashist autocracy. Everyone can handle 4 years of economic hardship, but once you have the autocrats in power you can’t get out of that shithole for generations. Just asked the North Koreans, Chinese or Russians.

I think there are many people who can’t handle 4 years of economic hardship. A lot of folks are barely making ends meet as-is.

Even so, endless fascism is still even worse. They won’t go willingly, and they won’t respect election results. Leave it too long and it will be as difficult as overthrowing Hitler or the USSR. Actually more difficult, because those regimes faced actual opposition from abroad, whereas now it feels like the whole world is going fascist.

We lost that battle when we let corporations become people. Since then corporations are the only people that matter. The rest of us are only consumers. This is capitalism cannibalizing itself.

If corporations can’t survive a period of incarceration, like zero operations or sales, they are not people. Stupid that Citizens United was passed.

Everyone can handle 4 years of economic hardship

I believe that’s what most Trump voters are thinking about. They’re willing to make some economic sacrifices to get the country to change in a way they agree with. And the fact that their liberal neighbors will also suffer economically, and more than them psychologically makes this sacrifice more palatable.

Many people cannot handle 6 months of economic hardship. Did you even think before writing that?

Yep. I agree with the idea that autocracy is worse, but I couldn’t disagree more that “anyone can handle 4 years of economic distress”
