An electric Volkswagen Golf GTI will make its debut before the end of the decade, according to the brand's top executive.

“While we don’t know how Schäfer defines “a true GTI,” the report adds that the electric GTI will remain front-wheel-drive.”

“The ID.2 will be the tip of the electric hot hatch iceberg. Beyond the Golf GTI, the portfolio will ultimately grow to include an electric successor to the Golf R that will retain the current car’s all-wheel-drive layout.”

“Auto Express adds that Volkswagen will continue to update the current, eighth-generation Golf through the end of the decade. There’s no word yet on whether that means the current GTI will live on until 2030.”

      Honestly I’d be really surprised. They may have cut the base Golf here but the MK8 GTI and R have a pretty strong presence, despite the interior controversy and so on.
