A friend of mine recently had their mother suffer a debilitating stroke leaving them completely paralyzed except for the ability to look at things and blink. This affords some very small amount of communication that is painfully slow. Jean-Dominique Bauby suffered from this “locked in syndrome” but famously wrote a book called “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” by blinking to signify letters as a transcriber painstakingly recited a frequency-ordered French alphabet to him over and over again. Would the eye tracking technology possibly be able to help speed up the communication process for people in this position? Looking at letters and blinking seems a lot faster than Bauby’s method and could potentially increase the quality of life for stroke victims and their families. I hope apple develops their technology with this in mind!
