These risks were accounted for in the safety requirements of the launch procedures, but Nedelin’s insistence on achieving a test launch ahead of the 7 November 1960 anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution resulted in extreme schedule pressure, in a context of substantial emerging engineering difficulties.[1][2] Ultimately pre-launch tests began to overlap with launch preparations.[2]

Going through a project right now that is about to slam full force into a brick wall for exactly the same reasons. Some things never change.

      I disagree.

Modern rocketry was invented by Tsiolkovsky (theory) + Goddard (liquid fuel) + Obert (engineering), only one of which was a nazi.

During WW2, nazis used slave labor to develop and industrialize rocketry, but they didn’t achieve anything. At most, they accelerated its development. Their rockets had training wheels, metaphorically speaking.

Post WW2, the nazi rocket program became the backbone of the US space program, and the USSR heavily based its own rockets on nazi rockets, but it’s the work of Zander (pre-WW2) and Korolev (pre-WW2 and post-WW2) that got rockets and then humans into space. Unlike the USA’s space program, Korolev refused to integrate nazi scientists in his operations, only brought some to help reconstruct V2s then sent them away. His team quickly surpassed german designs, the R-7 that got Sputnik to space was an entirely soviet design that had nothing in common with the V2.

The Nazis still built the first functioning rocket weapon and the first manmade object in space.

          first functioning rocket weapon

Chinese warfare had included rockets for centuries.

Americans and soviets had militarized rockets before WW2 (for ex. Katyusha on Wikipedia).

          first manmade object in space

          Define being in space.

The V2 barely grazed the edge of space, it didn’t have the power to actually escape the Earth’s gravitational péll.

Sputnik is the first object to actually be in space.

          The Nazis …

You should be wary that nazi glazing has effects. Thanks to their lasting propaganda, people really believe they were a high tech empire that surpassed the rest of the world in every domain, triumph of the will style. Still to this day it helps fascism’s image as the “clean high tech” way that surpasses the rest in the mind of too many people. Don’t contribute to that for a simple gotcha. Even if you’re right, it’s not worth it.

You can’t reason with people who don’t have the same definitions as you do because reasoning takes a common body of knowledge.

And people who are the propagandized have an instinctual dislike towards people not sharing their same corpus of knowledge: you have to use their own language or chip away the wrong definitions/axioms one by one until the new sets become reliable enough to start building something worthwhile.

Note that this works the inverse way too, which is why we are in such a mess all around the world.

Yeah, I’m a big fan of pulling out the concept of “rent seeking” as an ultimate evil and threat to capitalism, because you can explain why all the late stage capitalist horrors are actually anti-capitalist and get capitalists on side. Sometimes you don’t have to tear someone’s world view apart to get them to support making the world better

The theory is that profit seeking is “good” capitalism, where you make money by increasing overall productivity and skimming the extra off the top, but rent seeking is “bad” profiteering where you use your leverage to manipulate the situation so you can derive income without increasing productivity.

So building a factory on your land is capitalism, but leaving the hovels untouched and charging high rent because your tenants have nowhere else to go is rent-seeking.

In practise of course lots of rent seeking behaviour is done by people who claim to be capitalists, so it’s at least a good way to argue with them on their own terms

Clearly as the person who made this comic and this other comic and a bunch more on that theme, I must be a tankie because I used the word soviet in a non-negative way in my latest comic.

I’m sorry to say that your radar is faulty and that you are the orange person in the comic.

It’s used correctly IMO. You could argue that they’re factually wrong, but it’s not meant figuratively as far as I can tell.
