From Hades through Balatro to Streets Of Rogue and The King Is Watching, roguelikes and roguelites abound today for reasons both businessy and mysterious.
Roguelite is a certain spin to put on a game and it has seen a lot of popularity, but this is no different to the waves of popularity in making everything open world, or souls-like.
I love roguelites, but there are lots of badly made ones. The author is right that this can make for a quick games that uses AI, asset flips and limited design creativity to just make everything randomly generated… But that’s just bad game design and not really a genre mechanic problem. We’ve been through a golden age of roguelites and I’ve loved it. It’s completely my thing.
