Personally, I don’t bother to repair my (Interloper) gear until it hits about 70% condition. I feel that reaches a good balance between keeping gear in good condition and not feeling like I’m wasting cloth/hides. If I have more than (say) two bearhides or four deerhides around, I’ll repair earlier. And of course rabbithides are super easy to get and renewable, so I try to keep those above 90%.
Of course, I have a lot of cloth laid up now, and beachcombing is a fairly reliable source, so maybe 70% is too low. Should I go to 80%?
@rbos 70% is my threshold for clothing too. For tools, it’s more about when I have time to kill and I’m at a base with a whetstone or firearm cleaning kit. My knife, axe and any firearms are usually >90%
Agreed, since the whetstone/firearm condition restoration is like 5-8%, you don’t waste any of it. Clothing can repair up to 70% (like for socks) for one piece of cloth, so it always feels a bit wasteful to repair at high levels. But you need to stay warm!
@rbos I’m always very reluctant to repair clothes that aren’t my ‘final’ clothes, like sports socks. I know I’m going to get two pairs of wool eventually, so I let my sports socks get right down to rags unless I’m desperate for the extra temp.
