I’m trying to come up with a decent study routine between two languages. I would love to hear what languages you guys are learning, and how are you organizing your time between them. What has been working for you?
I speak English and French and I’m learning some other languages at different stages.
I think it really depends on my goal. For me, that’s largely being able to chat with my friends or their parents.
Since I work in English and French, I don’t particularly have to practice those languages. For other languages, I learn the common nouns, verbs, adjectives, and other phrases that I commonly use in my daily language. Once I am able to complete sentences, I just jump into practicing speaking with friends and watching some TV shows to help with understanding or listening to music to help with reading. I’m not trying to speak to the UN, I’d rather be able to comfortably at least make small talk and be able to get around a city by myself. I don’t have a particular study routine, I spend some time each day, maybe 30 min or an hour learning some new vocabulary. I don’t see any point in rushing to learn a language. For example, I think about how I would go about describing my day to someone and then look up any relevant vocabulary.
I study one language at a course, so I spend ~2 hours a week with it,
second language in a free time, so I spend ~2 hours a month with it. (This is a bit an exaggeration, but I really strugle with time-management and these things.)I think that the amount of time I give to the course-language is enough to slowly get into it, as it’s regular and quality.
