Of course it’d be pretty horrific to see a stuffed deer head mounted on the wall – amongst a group of anthro deer especially, but amongst ANY anthro character too, I’d imagine.
But of course it all depends. Whenever we consider such things in an anthro universe, it inevitably comes back to this question of which creatures are “people” and which ones are “actually” animals. Feral versus anthro, I suppose.
My favorite example of this is: consider how the wildebeest in The Lion King aren’t people – they are just a mindless herd of animals into which Mufasa falls and then he’s stampeded to death.
I don’t really have a point here. I just wanted to share a thought that I had while writing my story, which is a setting where birds and fish are NOT anthro, and that’s why it’s “okay” for the seafood restaurant to have a giant swordfish mounted on the wall.
I know it’s not the most elegant solution (it’s practically the goofy/pluto dichotomy), but in my story, anthro animals and feral animals are a completely different species.
Every animals has two variants, anthros and ferals. Both are completely different species, and the anthros treat ferals like we treat animals. With that, it’s not weird for anthros to hang feral heads, though anthro deer hanging a head of a feral deer would be a little jarring, like humans hanging the head of a monkey.
To be fair I usually take a more handwaved approach to worldbuilding. I focus my story more on its moral value as opposed to its worldbuilding. It doesn’t help that the few stories I write right now are about either a single anthro in a world of humans, so anthro worldbuilding are nearly nonexistent, or a simple and straightforward aesop-like story with very few worldbuilding.
Ooh! That’s a neat approach to it! I honestly don’t think there’s any wrong way to go about it. Pixeas and Henry kinda shares a similar architecture, with the anthro characters having evolved from their feral forms into their anthro forms. I totally agree with you on the handwaving. I feel like it’s far too easy to get too far out in the weeds trying to settle minutiae, which can often distract from the story. I’m going to blaspheme and say that this was one of my difficulties when reading The Hobbit back in High School. I just got so damn bored with how richly described every little thing was. It’s the difference between drinking an entire jar of Alfredo sauce, versus drizzling it over your pasta.
That’s why I rarely implement most of my worldbuilding ideas, only ones that are relevant to the story.

This doesn’t mean that the “anthros and ferals” approach is wrong– I mean I used it. It also doesn’t mean the author is lazy. There is more to worldbuilding than just species and it’s not impossible the author wanted to focus on another areas of worldbuilding instead. It can also be used brilliantly as the base concept is kind of vague, so you can build on top of it.

It’s theorized that hominids evolved their body plans first, then their intelligence, rather than the other way around. While it’s possible for a non-humanoid animal to develop a high level of intelligence, at least having the ability to manipulate objects in complex ways seems to be a significant factor in the development of higher intellect. Intelligence costs energy, so having a big, wrinkly cerebral cortex (or equivalent) is actually a negative unless you can put it to good use.
Then again dolphins are among the smartest animals on the planet and they just have fins for limbs, so it’s not the only factor.

It seems weird to us because we as humans and thus outside observers ultimately see it as two cats. But we generally don’t look at monkeys or apes in that way, or if we do, we still acknowledge a significant difference. And people do sometimes try to keep monkeys as pets (key word being try - it never works out for either the monkey or the human). An anthro cat might feel more of a reverence for their evolutionary ancestors due to the similarities, but I otherwise don’t think they’d see the “Goofy and Pluto” effect here.
And, of course, the feral cat’s not going to care beyond figuring out if the anthro cat is a threat or a new friend. If anything they’d probably have an easier time if body language carries over.
Honestly, one significant factor to consider is how human-like or animal-like anthros are as well. The ubiquitous “petting zoo people” style of anthro in the furry fandom probably wouldn’t be how an actual humanoid descendant of a non-primate would look, at least assuming similar environmental factors. What we’d probably end up seeing is a more “balanced” mix of human-like and animal traits. Shorter, broader snouts with more complex facial musculature, hands resembling a mix of a paw and a hand but leaning more towards a hand, an overall body shape a bit closer proportionally to their feral ancestors, etc. I feel like Rio Lepidoptera is a good example of what a realistic evolutionary anthro would look like. And at that point there’s definitely a significant difference in physical appearance between the anthro and their evolutionary ancestors, so it would probably make things less weird even from a human point of view.
Fully agree with you here. It’s only anecdotal, but my own experiences with monkeys/humans was that for the longest time I hated monkeys because some of them were a little bit too similar for comfort. And the thing is, in hindsight, humans and monkeys aren’t even that similar. We’re certainly not more similar than a feral and an anthro foxes or wolves.
I think that including and handwaving it (or not mentioning it at all) is a perfectly viable solution, but if it’s mentioned too much without proper handling, it will end up becoming weird, and possibly even an obstacle to proper reading (for example, if you keep referring to feral foxes and anthro foxes as just “fox”, you either need to always be explicit (“the feral fox” and “the ??? fox”), or risk confusing readers).
Plus, and this is probably just be me, but I think it would be weird to include that detail, and even call attention to it, but never explore it.
Did you ever have to, or chose to, deal with pets? In particular things like having an anthro Golden Retriever character and a feral Golden Retriever dog in the same scene.
If I was using this handwaved approach I would probably avoid scenes like that, which have the potential for maximum weirdness, but I’d be curious about other approaches.
Can’t answer for @BlubberSeal, but in my hand-waved sci-fi setting, I’ve gone with a two-part solution for pets.

Feral animals are genetically and socially far enough removed from anthros to be considered their own primitive species. They are treated like in our world.

Pets are inconvenient in a high-tech space future, so if anything, most people have robot pets designed as small feral animals. These double as ‘intelligent’ personal technological interfaces (think smartphones, but cool).

It’s an interesting concept to explore. Certainly, it would probably be macabre for an anthro deer to see a deer mount on the wall, akin to visiting Buffalo Bill’s house in Silence of the Lambs and seeing his sewing room. Real life analogues do exist though. David Sedaris, the famed humorist, once wrote about trying to acquire a real human anatomy skeleton he found at a shop in France for his husband. That guy who died at Mammoth Cave in Kentucky was kept in a glass coffin for viewing (for a fee), as was Lenin’s body. I once personally encountered a shop in Hampden which centered itself upon the sale of the macabre, and while I don’t believe they were for sale (I honestly didn’t think to ask), did have several (allegedly) real human skulls on display in amongst the antique surgical tools and vintage taxidermy.
At its core, its the “Goofy/Pluto” dichotomy. It’s Mae in Night in the Woods seeing a fat raccoon in the center of town, when she herself is a bipedal talking cat and bipedal talking raccoon characters exist in universe. I think it’s hard (if not impossible) to really fully imagine the mechanics of how an anthro world would be constructed from our vantage point as humans. Despite the fact that, at our core, we’re just smarter apes, we’ve so removed ourselves from the natural world that there’s us (“people,” who are intelligent, reasoning, and thinking…allegedly), and then there’s “animals,” which is every other living creature on the planet over which we hold dominion. Trying to create similar structures and analogues is hard because of how/where to draw the line. To us as “people” it seems rather clear. To us as imagined “animal-people,” it’s much more difficult.
In my opinion, it’s also difficult to create settings that feel “alive” (for lack of a better term) without wildlife of some sort. I went the same direction you did with a story I wrote once where birds, fish, amphibians, ect. were a natural part of the environment as “animals,” and then most mammals (like canids, felidae, cervidae, mustelids, whatever possums are, ect.) were “animal-people.” In my head, those rules made sense based upon the relationship between those two “classes” (for lack of a better term) of animals, so that fish and birds could be guilt-free food and I could populate creeks and streams with crayfish, salamanders, ect to give some texture to my rural setting. I also felt like it was easier to write about critters with paws which could be used in an analogous manner to hands and with biologies similar to ours.
An example that went the complete opposite direction would be Bojack Horseman, with critters of every kind being anthropomorphized in that show. It played with that concept to great comedic effect and handwaved the rest, which worked perfectly for the setting the show had created (at least in my opinion).
I think either way works as long as there is some sort of framework or rules that doesn’t trip the “Goofy/Pluto” dichotomy. That’s my $0.02 worth.
Heh, I consistently forget that Goofy is a dog. Maybe I do this willingly to avoid having to think about the Goofy/Pluto conundrum, haha.
For most stories, I think handwaving or lampshading the weirdness of it is the way to go.
For the remainder… I’d say it’s a matter of what kind of culture you want to create. Taxidermy is one of the problematic areas, but there are many more, such as, but not limited to: pets, cattle, wild animals, and food.
Food is probably the easier to step into. Is every anthro herbivore? That may work if you have an herbivore-only world, but may become jarring if you have carnivores too. If you accept that you need meat, and you aren’t willing to handwave it away, where does it come from? The way I see it, as soon as you have meat, you need wild animals to provide it.
Wild animals then. In some settings you can dodge the problem. On magical settings, you can have anthros being sentient, and magic creatures not sentient, and that’s where the meat comes from. On sci-fi settings you can dodge it with all wild animals beings extinct, and meat being synthetically created from some of them. On more “normal” settings you can maybe have only one sentient species, and every other being wild/non-anthro, or maybe only mammals being sentient, and all others being wild (Imperium Lupi goes with this. Wolves, and hyenas are the main species; bunnies, pigs, + others are “secondary” species; bugs and fish are all wild + magic (iirc)). If you have an all mixed setting… you’re kinda screwed. You’re gonna need a whole lot of either worldbuilding or handwaving.
As a less hypothetical example, in my ongoing Star Fox fanfic I mention synthetic meat, and rely on the “readers only make level-1 questions” assumption to avoid going deeper into that particular rabbit hole. If it does turn out to be necessary, however, I can always handwave it with “alien wild animals”. Things such as pets, though? I won’t be touching that subject with a 10-foot pole, there will be exactly zero mentions of any domestic animals, it is not worth the trouble.
