What’s the deal with seasonal or one-off colors of pretty basic products? Products that come in a wide range of colors to begin with? (Think Converse All Star.) I’m quite particular about colors. When I see a product I like online, I’ll look up some variations to compare and often one color will just sort of click. This color will then turn out to be sold out everywhere (probably for quite some time already). This has happened with four different products and brands these past few months. You ask the manufacturer and they respond ‘Yeah, we don’t make that color anymore.’ Why? You’re out of dye? It’s literally better than any of the colors you currently have available.

I guess it’s a marketing thing, creating a certain exclusivity, getting people who maybe already own a ‘regular’ version of the product to buy this exciting new color. Whatever. Afterwards though, it has the opposite effect (at least on me), where not only am I not buying that color (as it’s unavailable), but I’m not buying the ‘I wish it was blue’ version either. It’s mildly annoying and the placeholder would be a constant reminder of that mild annoyance.

A variation on this is: ‘Sorry, we don’t sell that particular color in your part of the world.’ ‘Why the hell not? Regardless, can you ship it to me at least? I’ll pay, I don’t care.’ ‘No.’ ‘Okay, goodbye forever.’
