Oh, I never suggested that. Livability on this planet will be very unevenly distributed and those who can hoard resources will protect it at all costs. But yeah, we are nearly impossible to kill off completely. Language, planning and writing are the big game changers that give us a leg up on past species that faced extinction events. I don’t think even nuclear war or a meteor strike will fully wipe out humanity at this point.
We’ve never experienced scarcity at the global level like we are about to face (at least since the Ice Age anyway). Humanity’s response will be the true horror of the climate crisis. Just look at how Europe reacted to the Syrian refugee crisis and how the US is panicking now over migrants at the border. These numbers are not even a trickle of what is to come when the Global South can no longer produce enough food to sustain itself. We’ve seeing firsthand just how easily the populace can be whipped up into a frenzy of xenophobia and readily promote violence as an acceptable solution. Now ramp that up by several orders of magnitude.

When I see massive and highly technical projects like this I wonder where they find enough skilled labor to build it. Just look at the immense complexity of this and they have to build miles and miles of it underground. I’m imagining that all of the construction workers have PhDs in physics or some shit. Or am I overestimating the demands here?

I’ve never liked Billy Corgan (even before his reactionary libertarian side came out) and I always tried my best to dislike Smashing Pumpkins, so it annoyed me how great of a songwriter and musician he actually is. It took some time for me to realize and admit it, but Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie really are masterpieces. And 1979, along with Mayonnaise and Today, are my three favorite Pumpkins songs. The video is so perfect for this song too. A pure nostalgia bomb for anyone who grew up in the 90s like me.

Coming from a different angle, I was deep into the punk rock scene at the time of the nu-metal explosion and we disliked the genre because we viewed them as corny fratboy meatheads. I loved both metal and hip-hop but despised nu-metal bands even though I enjoyed some proto-nu-metal bands that fused the sounds (like Anthrax). And the Judgment Night soundtrack went HARD. So I guess some of it was just prejudiced elitism on my part.
It’s also not a closed, finite system because it relies on the extraction of resources and labor from outside of the imperial core.
It’s expensive, rare, and instantly recognizable. That’s all you need for people to show it off. Once their exclusivity fades everyone will just move on to the next trend. If Lambos were as cheap and commonplace as Camrys they would lose all cachet.

What’s funny is that ferrets have been domesticated for thousands of years for a similar purpose as cats but they’re still viewed as wild or exotic by many. California and Hawaii still prohibit ownership of ferrets out of fear that they will harm native wildlife populations. Yet cats are completely legal and are much more capable hunters in every situation other than underground burrows. And anyone who has owned or interacted with a pet ferret knows how completely useless they would be surviving in the wild on their own. They have zero self preservation instinct.
They would most likely look the same but there are still evolutionary changes deeper in the DNA that aren’t visible like metabolic and digestive functions. A modern horseshoe crab would not be able to reproduce with one from a 100 million years ago despite looking virtually identical.
