  • certainly economically it’s not great in the short term and probably not over the long term either if inshallah current trends continue but in their minds anyway they are playing the long game of betting on the continued existence of western hegemony and their privileged place in it because in their present frame of mind it’s the only option they have. the tenders of ‘the garden’ don’t see themselves collabing with venezuela and ghana to solve problems, they see themselves as dictating terms, and they don’t have the weight to do that without their violent idiot child and its pet rabid bulldog running rampant all over the place. it’s the same implicit threat that has always existed behind the ‘rules based order’, trump just takes the implicit and makes it explicit as a matter of course.

  • perhaps things would be different if they didn’t also rely on the same hegemonic ‘rules based international order’ for extraction of the global south’s resources, but for now they do. if anything, the west’s political classes are inwardly enthused at this fresh infusion of material for the load bearing pillar of their domestic politics, pointing at the us and saying ‘i’m sorry we can’t materially improve anything for you but at least we’re not like the americans!’

  • very good post. if you can’t go out into the world and talk to people without thinking about how they’re all irredeemably evil treatlerites and you tell yourself you only feel that way because of “materialism” (ie you read some internet lenin’s essay or watched a youtube) you’re not going to organize anything more than that disco elysium communism book club. it’s hard work and it’s going to take a long time and that sucks, so come here and let off some steam, but if you live in the west, don’t just automatically give up on everyone in whatever hellcountry you live in. if you can’t find an org, volunteer for something useful and integrate yourself just a little bit into whatever community exists where you are. if that’s too much, and all you can do is gently nudge a couple of people in the right (left) direction, you’re still doing something real, even if it feels small. even if you’re not in a place to do any of that, there’s still value in reframing the way you think about these things and maybe eventually getting to the point where you have the capacity to do more. but you can’t do that if you’re envisioning the person who drives an uber for 6 hours after their wendys shift as an intractable foe drunk off the riches of imperialism.
