42 here. In my teens and 20s I had depression, so I told myself horrible things like “I’m only worth anything to ppl bc of my art” and “everyone’s worse off for having known me,” but I don’t think like that anymore. I’ve been trying to think for a few mins if I tell myself positive stuff now instead, but I don’t think I do, I just stopped telling myself garbage.

I used to sketch out ppls’ answers and give them the drawing to remind them they’re creative even if they never considered themselves in that light before. Bc every single person I ask can come up with at least one thing, from jeans with a star patch on the back pocket to a tiny home village arrayed a certain way.

It took me a minute after joining lemmy to realize an upvote for bad news is basically “Hey, this article is worth reading and talking to ppl about”

In hindsight, the Dominionism Cult was started in the 70s to take over America. The fascists have been the same this whole time. Checkout “Totalitarianism in America” by Chris Hedges. My mom was in this cult in the 90s, and I have disgusting memories of going to secret meetings where they taught ppl how to brainwash ppl and become their “friend” so they could use them. Now it’s rich ppl and republicans, same MOs though.

The advice I got that helped eventually when I was depressed was “keep your sense of humor.” That was really hard to do, but I settled for appreciating irony. Like dark irony prettymuch, like for instance when I was a kid and learned about the fall of Rome, I was like “how cool would it have been to have been alive at the time and see it happen firsthand?” Cut to 3 decades later and I’m finding out. Helps me keep perspective.

I’m disabled now, so can’t do much, just like it’s hard to feel like you can do much when you’re depressed, so I’ll share this quote that gives me hope, purpose, and joy, and maybe it’ll help you too:
