World News@lemmy.ml•Japan’s population drops by nearly 800,000 with falls in every prefecture for the first time
181·2 years agoI watch them too. And there’s another similar channel of a single young (American, I think?) woman who’s doing the same thing. And again, the locals are very welcoming - I suspect this depends on whether the newcomers are making an effort to integrate, learn the language, etc.

Canada@lemmy.ca•'Should I even be having children?' Eco-anxiety fueled by summer of adverse weather
171·2 years agoI try to reserve judgement, mainly because I never wanted kids, so not having them was an easy choice for me. I can’t pretend to understand the biological drive to procreate, since I don’t feel it.
But yeah…I suspect a LOT of people who have kids (especially young kids) are very much burying their heads in the sand to avoid the reality. Especially as climate-related disasters start happening with increasing frequency. The horror of seeing collapse coming for their children will be devastating mentally - most people will lean hard into the cognitive dissonance to avoid facing it.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Here's how much food prices jumped in June in Canada
1·2 years agoHave you looked into a local weekly produce box? I’m admittedly outside of Toronto so my access is a bit easier, but I’m sure there are services you can sign up for that would deliver. You don’t get to pick what you get, but it’s helped me to expand my cooking repertoire and I find the qualify and price is superior to most grocery stores.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Pierre Poilievre drops the glasses as part of an image revamp
6·2 years agoOn the one hand, I am loathe to mock or belittle people based on their physical appearance - it’s cruel and immature.
On the other hand, he chose to make this change and holy shit but does he ever look exactly like a glasses-less Milhouse, and it makes me giggle like a small child.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How many Lemmy users are non-technical background?
5·2 years agoProfessional fundraiser, having worked in non-profit my entire career (and my university degree was in a social sciences field). I wouldn’t call myself technically proficient, but I’m technically savvy - I was an early adopter of the internet as a teen, and have been online in some form or another since the mid-90s. Fuck spez.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some examples of your tastes changing as you got older?English
6·2 years agoI want good icing, not that awful shortening-based shit you get on most commercial cakes. And to be honest, I mostly only want good cake too (ie, homemade or from a bougie bakery).

Movies and TV Shows@lemmy.film•Have you noticed how movies are getting longer?English
2·2 years agoYeah, I watch anything I want to see at home, in my comfy entertainment room. The last movie I saw in theatres was in late 2021, I think? And that was at a local, independently owned theatre. The big corporate ones are so ridiculously overpriced these days.

Movies and TV Shows@lemmy.film•Have you noticed how movies are getting longer?English
14·2 years agoI don’t necessarily object to longer films, but my small-to-begin-with-and-now-middle-aged bladder sure does. Bring back intermissions!
MagpieRhymes@lemmy.worldtoBad Women's Anatomy@lemmy.blahaj.zone•Once you start measuring skulls, you are too far goneEnglish
29·2 years agoAhh phrenology, the most accurate of scientific methods for assessing not just gender, but criminality!
I’m halfway through Naomi Novik’s (edit - fecking autocorrect) third instalment of her Scholomance trilogy, The Golden Enclaves. So far I’m enjoying it!
I primarily use small (3”x3”) microfibre towels for dishwashing - bought a pack of four a while ago ant the grocery store and am still using them. I can’t remember what I paid, but I don’t expect it was much more than $6 or $7 CAD.
I also have a sturdier microfibre scrubby that’s holding up less well, which I wouldn’t buy again. And then, of course, steel wool for the big-time elbow grease jobs.
Yeah, this is pretty much my standard now too. I was in hospital for a day surgery recently and was more than a little taken aback at the fact that I was one of the only people masking.

2·2 years agoA wise choice, it’s a time-suck for sure.

2·2 years agoAhhh good ol’ FPS death. I never make it that far, mainly because I love to embark somewhere with a waterfall.

4·2 years agoDwarf Fortress, been playing it off and on for many years now. I happily bought the steam version when it came out!

Fantasy@lemmy.ml•What are your favorite fantasy novels/series?English
1·2 years agoI always come back to Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books, they are an eternal favourite. I love all Robin McKinley’s books, and Garth Nix’s Abhorsen novels are up there, too.
In terms of a more recent (and shorter) series, I very much enjoyed Katherine Arden’s Winternight trilogy, NK Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy, and so far I’ve liked Freya Marske’s first two books in her The Last Binding series. Honourable mentions for the Dresden Files and Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London (which are just fun).
I have read Mistborn, but a while ago, and to be honest it didn’t really stick with me. I’ve also started the first Malazan (edit, fecking autocorrect) book a few times and just couldn’t get into it.

politics @lemmy.world•Conservatives go to red states and liberals go to blue as the country grows more polarized
1·2 years agoThere is a real threat of harm to various minority groups living in red states. Hell, there’s a real threat of harm to women who can fall pregnant living in red states. I’d certainly not want to live there if my accidentally falling pregnant (which would likely be ectopic in my case) would result in a very high chance of my death.

Fantasy@lemmy.ml•[Tor Books]Goblin Markets and Other Uncanny Fantasy Shopping Experiences
1·2 years agoThis would be a great header! I love this artist, Arthur Rackham - his pictures all have this weird fever-dream quality. I have a copy of illustrated Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen from childhood, lots of great weirdness in there too.

What a handsome Torontonian!
